If you have already sold the item, you should be able to contact buyer to pay through your PayPal account or other payment method - as long as the buyer already paid for the un-modified item.
I agree with the first part, but the 2nd part here is bad advice.
- eBay will see this as 'taking the transaction off eBay' and that is very much against policy.
- Sending an invoice through PayPal exposes both your and your buyer's real email address. This could open you up to the classic 'PayPal fake you've got money' scam.
I'd say better safe than sorry and just adjust the price in the listing and note in the description why you've increased the price.

Thanks for the clarifications and help, I will change my listing to not needing immediate payment and let them buy it and modify the invoice 🙂

Unless there have been some kind of changes that I have read about the only thing that can be changed on the "invoice" is the shipping cost.
It could be possible that I am among the uninformed.

So should I temporarily modify the price of the item or modify the invoice that way?
Also it seems strange that ebay doesn't have a proper method for doing this without making a separate listing

Make a new listing to reflect what is included-- the item plus the modification. Price accordingly.
Or if they've already purchased it and paid, make another listing just for the modification. You could put what item it refers to in the listing.

instead of making a new listing or changing the invoice after the sale you could just go in and edit the shipping costs for this listing before they buy it. jacking up the shipping cost for special treatment is fast and easy with an edit when all you want to do is charge more for an extra

Thanks for everyone's input and help. In the end I just increased the listing price and then changed it back. In the future I will probably just make different listings or include a variation drop down.
