My first transaction.
I received a request to purchase my item from, "buyer" on ebay.
The buyer confirmed how much I would sell the item for and then asked to pay via 'echeck', via email and that they would have their ‘financier’ arrange payment and request a 'mover' to pick up my item.
I accepted buyers' terms, removed the item from active status, and sent buyer, my contact info email, address, and cell phone via text to a phone number they provided.
I received an email from 'differentname No. 1'@gmail.com', titled ‘PAYMENT”, with files attached, ‘FRONTVIEW.png’, and ‘BACK VIEW.jpg’ images of a check made out by ‘Dr. different name No.2’ for a radically different amount double the negotiated amount with the buyer, with instructions to read via cell phone for deposit into my bank via mobile app.
I texted the buyer explaining the check amount, the check name, and email name differences, and that I preferred to transact his purchase via Paypal and he/she unloaded on me saying I was not meeting the terms of our agreement and was talking trash, and that he/she was going to report me.
From my review, the buyer has an excellent Ebay purchase track record. The phone number is located with a business in Northern CA, but buyer's location is listed in Southern CA.
I am concerned about the check made out to a different amount than negotiated, written by an undisclosed third-party, and sent from yet another undisclosed third party called a 'financier' that cannot use Paypal for making a transaction. What kind of financier is that?
My first transaction - lessons learned are to never transact a sale off of the Ebay system. What a farce!

Hi @micthor1651
You are being SCAMMED.
Stop communicating and cancel the order on Day 5, choosing ‘Buyer hasn’t paid’ as the reason.
Again, you are being conned, because you’re new to selling.

Actually a buyer can pay by e-check.
He just attaches his bank account to Paypal.
When he buys something, the money is immediately removed from his bank account, but has to clear the banking system before being paid out to the seller.
With PP this was usually three or four days. With Managed Payments it will take longer, since MP will not "front" a cleared payment to the seller as PP was able to do.
None of which is what your "buyer" was doing.
TL/DR
SCAM!!

It is a scam!
Oh, did someone say that already? Well, it is a SCAM, just in case it went unheard.

Take a deep breath and rest comfortably. There is a 99.99% chance that the check - if there actually is one - isn't any good in the first place.

Oh, yeah - buyers can only have 100% positive feedback. Of course it looks good, if there is any - sellers can't leave bad remarks on a positive feedback, either.

There's a trick to that though.
Look at the FB Left for Others.
Some scammers will gloat. Or they will leave FB like "thank you for working with me".
And same with sellers. While we cannot leave FB*, some sellers still can't stop themselves and leave rude or hysterical false positives. Those are the sellers to avoid!
*We can use the much more effective Unpaid Item Dispute and also Block deadbeats who have gotten Strikes from UIDs.

You were asking for trouble when you violated eBay's policy to take the sale off eBay. This was a scam right from the beginning. These same scammers tried to steal from sellers on Craigslist and Facebook as well. Never take checks from anyone. Recently I received messages from a buyer for an antique plate that wanted to send me a cashiers check and send a courier to pick it up. Experience has proven that cashier checks can be forged too. Cashier checks aren't free either, Instead I told them I would only accept a US Postal Service Money Order as they are secure. Not surprised when they didn't respond.
By the way the word financier is used by non domestic individuals such as Nigerians.

One last point was that the buyer threatened to report you made me laugh as they violated eBay's policy by trying to take the sale off eBay, and then foist an illegal payment method on you. Simply an attempt to intimidate you.

Yes - financier was scammy - like using magistrate, an instant tell.
Is there any way to report this scam to anyone. I am still getting text msgs from the scammer, but I don't want to block the number just yet, in case there is some way to track this **bleep**.

No.
As noted above, taking the transaction off-eBay was a violation of eBay policy. If you report it to eBay, there's a distinct possibility that YOU will get in trouble. Just move on. And remember that all communications about your eBay listings and transactions should strictly go through eBay's own message system.
