Report Scam Messages - User asking to Ship to Different Address

I recently had an item sell and within a short time after it sold I received a private message from an account/username that was not the account that purchased the item. The message said they were excited about the purchase and it was a gift for their boyfriend and to ship it to an address that did not match the address in the transaction details - it wasn't even in the same state. It's most certainly a scam.

How can I report this to eBay? I can't find anywhere to report this kind of thing. Between this and another recent incident it's becoming apparent that eBay has serious deficiencies when it comes to receiving and investigating reports of fraud.

Yes, this is an old scam where they troll for sold listings hoping to get them redirected.

That is why never ever send anything other than to the address on the paypal account.

Glad you did not fall for it.

As to reporting imo it is a waste of time.  Everyone's vigilance to that type of scam will eventually shut them down.

Everyone is right a scammer is trying to trick you.  Dont ever ship to a unconfirmed address.  Make sure to block and report.  Your report button should about the 4th colume down on your left of your seller hub.  Best regards

@tallerthangiants21, put the person on your Blocked Bidder List so they won't be able to buy from you in the future.  There's also a tick box you can check so that those you've blocked cannot send you messages, though since this person has already messaged you, I'm not sure if that function works retroactively.

Also, don't ever correspond with anyone outside of eBay's internal messaging system.  Sometimes such scammers will send you an email or text message direct, or even call your phone.   Also, when you get such messages as this don't reply or click on any links.

There used to be a "Report Member" button on the eBay internal messaging pages.  For some reason, eBay discontinued that.  Don't bother trying to call eBay and report the person either as eBay apparently doesn't care anymore.   Just protect yourself by adding them to your BBL and continue to be vigilant to spot any others who try to trick you by using the same scam in the future.   Kudos to you for spotting it from the get-go; not everyone unfortunately does.

No,  if you haven't done business with the person there's not.

Re: Report Scam Messages - User asking to Ship to Different Address

Looooong story short. I tried reporting this to eBay and Paypal. A day later it was confirmed to be fraud. The account used to purchase the item was a hacked Paypal account (which is what I suspected and tried to report but no one at either company would listen.) For everyone's future reference, I suspected the fraud in part because of the address used was known to be connected to fraud. The address is 5 South Main Street Englishtown, NJ 07726. If you google it there are lots of accounts and reviews of people being hacked and defrauded. Neither eBay or Paypal seemed interested in investigating it any further.

Re: Report Scam Messages - User asking to Ship to Different Address

I recently got one of these Scam ship to messages from a person who did not win my auction as well. It came in immediately following the close of auction. It’s clear hackers have bots doing this work and eBay is not protecting its community against these types of fraud attacks. eBay has become even more Wild West than it was when it started. Will be amazed if this company is in business in ten years.

I'd send the buyer a message  explaining that sellers can ONLY ship to the address on file . I've had this happen too . Some buyers don't realize  that sellers  can not always comply with special requests .  Tulips

I had a buyer one time purchase three necklaces , one for herself , one for her daughter and one for a friend . She sent me everyone's  separate  address   in the message to seller box. 😞   Tulips

The message was not from the buyer; it was just a scammer hoping to fool the seller into shipping to his address instead of the address of the real buyer. The scammers will troll recently-ended listings for popular scammed items, and send out those messages in bulk to as many sellers as possible before the account is shut down.

The problem is how to report the scam message to eBay, now that the Report link in the message is gone, and the sender of that message is not actually involved in a transaction with the seller.

Re: Report Scam Messages - User asking to Ship to Different Address

It may not have been scam. I had buyers before paid wanted me o mail to other. They were just buying gift. For Mothers Bothers Fathers Friends and others. So I had no problem to just change address. All sales I have done like this has been with fine results. If the message was thru E Bay messaging then. You are covered with seller protection. During Christmas every year on my Pecans get a lot of the change address. The buyers message me thru E Bay messaging. Add the address they want me to mail. A little hassle but I make the buck . But lots of other sellers may not fell like me. I wish you the best. Was it a bid ?  You did say message after the buy? So it may could be scam.
