Same here. It's unfair and annoying. Apparently, eBay doesn't know which tax rates should apply to the given item in the given country, so they use the country's highest or default rate. Since when is eBay a tax authority?? It's none of their business.

@submarinesmodels, @adga-6591

We don't have VAT here in the USA, but eBay does provide information about their requirement to collect VAT for purchases that are delivered to the EU.

https://pages.ebay.com/vat-eu/

It says that eBay does not collect VAT if the buyer is registered for VAT in their country, and provides their VAT registration number on their eBay account. I believe that you have to be registered with a business account to do this.

If you have more questions, you should ask on one of he eBay websites in he EU, where the users will have more experience with VAT.

As a seller who used to ship to the EU, I don't like it either.

I sell to someone in the EU and they pay VAT when they purchase on eBay, and I put the number on the package and when it arrives where ever it's going (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, doesn't seem to matter), Customs then charges VAT again plus handling fees for collecting the VAT, when it's already been paid.

I had to stop shipping to the EU to put an end to this double tax nonsense happening to my store.
