I made a mistake and had to refund a buyer, all is well.. my buyer was quite nice.
I refunded through PayPal.
I can't figure how to get credit for FVF? Or if I even can. Thanks in advance.

Mam, I beg to differ -- Cancelling an order leads to an automatic refund from eBay. If she does a cancellation now she will have refunded them twice: one through paypal and once via the automatic refund due to cancellation.
OP -- When you refund through paypal you do not get your eBay FVF's back. Cut your losses and move on at this point.

WHOOPS!
When you go and fully refund through PP before taking care of it in Ebay [filing a cancellation] you automatically get a defect on your account.
Normally what you would do is file for a cancellation of the transaction in Ebay [resolution center] and then issue the refund. It is the cancellation process that refunds your FVFs.
So now your only option is to go to the resolution center and issue a cancellation as soon as you can. If you choose one of the buyer reasons, it won't hurt your account. But if you use a seller's reason, it will ding your stats.

I don't totally agree with either of you on this one. When the new cancellation process first came out I still refunded through paypal as I'd always done and then went to file the cancellation, it did not refund them twice. I have since learned to file the cancellation first, which automatically refunds, and thus saves time.

Thank you all, next time I know! I'll just leave it alone.
Hopefully there won't be a next time. 😄

If you refunded by clicking the refund link on the same transaction that the buyer paid you with, then eBay can see that you refunded, and they won't refund again when you do the cancellation.
If you refunded by using the "Send Money" tab instead, then you can call eBay customer service and give them the transaction number for the refund. That should allow them to check and see that the money was refunded to the buyer's account.
Either way, you should be able to get the credit for the final value fees as long as you refunded in full. I think they can remove a defect as well.

Not true or at least it hasn't been for me. I don't have any dings and I've never doubled refunded a buyer. And since the OP has already refunded the buyer it is a viable alternative for them so that the ding gets removed.

Actually Fern that is what I said as well. Since the OP already refunded, they need to go and file the cancellation so they get the ding off their account. The ding is more important than a FVF.
And yes, the cancellation process is so simple and easy to use if you have not yet refunded. I firmly agree with you.

Probably just the way I read that statement which made me not totally agree. It sounded like you described a two step process rather than one.

I don't recommend doing nothing after issuing a full refund. Ebay reps have advised us that will trigger a defect if they don't detect an accompanied cancellation to explain the reason.
Of course the reason you choose for cancelling can also trigger a defect.

It technically is two step. 1. You file for the cancellation. 2. You hit the refund button to create the refund to the buyer.

I totally agree with you Fern. Sounds like she is flying under the radar with this paypal refund so I would just let it be. I don't go into paypal whatsoever -- it's an easy process: cancel through eBay, which automatically refunds the buyer. But I rarely do that at all thought actually -- I say return for refund!

Just call ebay.
They'll refund it for you while on the phone.

That is ONE approach. If you are willing to accept the ding on your selling stats, then of course there is no problem and it is your right to do so.
But in reality, it will take well under a minute to file the cancellation. And that stop the ding from being on your stats.
But like I said, if you are not wanting to spend the time to file a cancellation and you aren't concerned about the ding, the yes, just leave it alone.

Yes that is another great option. But I would question why someone would be willing to spend all that time on the phone trying to get a CSR to understand the issue and get your FVF refund, when you can just spend a few seconds [literally] to file the cancellation.
FYI calling Ebay will not get the ding removed.
