Some people do not know this, but this part of eBay's policy on returns.

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/managing-returns-refunds/ask-ebay-to-step-in?id=4702

What happens after eBay steps in

We'll review the details of your case and will aim to resolve it in the fairest way possible. We normally come back with an answer within 48 hours, though occasionally it might take longer if we need more information.

Once we've found a resolution, we'll let you and the buyer know the outcome and anything else you need to do. For example, we may ask the buyer to return the item to you in these situations:

  • We can't determine that the item received by the buyer matches the listing description
  • You offer returns and your stated return policy applies
  • You already offered to accept a return

If we determine that you've met your obligations to the buyer, the case will be closed and you won't need to do anything else.

If we determine that you are responsible for providing a refund to the buyer, we'll issue the refund and then seek reimbursement from you. You won't receive fee credits if this happens, and the case will be counted as "closed without seller resolution", which can affect your seller performance level.

For more information about how eBay decides the outcome of a case, see our eBay Money Back Guarantee policy.

If you don't agree with our resolution, you can appeal by providing new information within 30 calendar days of the case being closed.

Here is another part of returns.

Unable to resolve the buyer’s issue? Ask eBay to step in

Ask eBay to step in

If you and the buyer haven’t been able to come to an agreement after 3 business days, you can ask us to step in and resolve the issue. We’ll assess all the information and come to a decision. It’s important to remember that if you ask us to step in and we close the case in the buyer’s favor, you could receive a defect (which might affect your seller standards), so you should only ask us for help when you’ve exhausted all other options.

Appeal eBay’s decision on a case

If you disagree with our decision after we’ve been asked to step in, you can ask us to take another look for up to 30 days after the claim has been closed. In order to request an appeal, you must provide additional details for us to take into consideration, such as photographs showing there’s nothing wrong with the item. We’ll review your new information and get back to you with our final decision, usually within 48 hours.

What did you think would happen when you refused the return?  The return system is there to protect YOU. If you had approved, you would have your item back and they would get their money back. Ebay would have refunded their fees to you when you did the refund. Then you could resell ring.  As it is, Ebay had no other course of action.

When a buyer files an INAD and you want the item returned before refunding, you need to accept the return and provide return shipping.

No returns does not mean no refunds.

You refused the return. That tells eBay you don't WANT the item back. They refunded the buyer under the MBG. You are out exactly what you agreed to lose.

It's your job as a user of the platform to understand the rules. Maybe not what you want to hear, but this is exactly how it works for ALL sellers here.

The system should have recognized lack of compliance to the return policy and for that price and relative low cost of shipping have just issued an automatic return label to the buyer. This entire system of refunding is indeed complete nonsense. They could at least have warned the seller with some bold faced message or something. I don’t understand how anyone could defend this company.

It’s a no win situation for you and many others. If you had accepted the return he would have popped out your real stone and replaced it with a fake, or sent back a ring out of a Cracker Jack box. Sorry this happened to you

eBay offers a money back guarantee when an buyer claims an item is "Not as Described".

If you refused a "Not As Described" case, you are telling eBay you do not want the item back if the buyer gets refunded.

And the buyer almost always gets refunded, because eBay offers a money back guarantee.

Not defending the system, just explaining it.

Sellers CAN set auto returns in their hub. Too many people that sell here think they can set the listing to NO RETURNS, and it actually mean NO returns. There is NO such thing as NO refunds. You as a seller do not have to take an item back, but you DO have to refund in most all cases.

I don't know why anyone thinks it's eBay's job to warn you in BOLD, that you are about to lose your item. You can certainly refuse a return, but you can't refuse a refund. You also are going to get a ding in your metrics if eBay has to do the refund for you.

Anyone choosing no returns is asking for trouble. Because every case that comes here complaining about their "no returns policy" they end up losing the item AND the money. Nothing sold here is a final sale, ever. So there should not even BE the option for no returns.

It's a shame that you came here after all this when you should have come here before and asked questions.

One important thing to remember, even if eBay had refused a refund, he could have done a credit card chargeback; that would get his money back and he would keep the item anyway, and chargebacks are rarely ever denied to cardholders. If he paid via PayPal, he would have yet another way to get his money back in addition to eBay's MBG and the credit card chargeback.

It is a hard lesson for new sellers. You really cannot refuse a return, even if you specify no returns, a buyer will get their money back one way or another. On a high value item, ever, ever argue with a buyer, just take the return, at least you will get your item back and prevent a more significant loss.
