Refund question

I just received my first request for a refund.  The buyer and Ebay notified me that he did not want the item - he changed his mind.  I followed the instructions on Ebay to approve the return.  Ebay is how holding the total from the sale - the price of the item and the shipping.  Is this the usual?  I'm offering the item price minus restocking.  Will Ebay then release the difference?  Thanks in advance.

Refund question

Good point. I'll rethink. Still, why does Ebay say I can refund just the price of the item if they do not allow me to do that? Just wondering.

He changed his mind is buyer's remorse.

Paypal is  holding the total from the sale.   This is so you have the money there to refund the buyer when the item comes back to you.

Sorry this happened to you.

Thanks. But they are holding more than the refund amount, what that amount will be. He is not entitled to the shipping charges.

Yes the buyer going to get the full amount of their original payment including the original shipping charges.

If you are signed up for eBay's managed returns you can apply a restocking fee and in some cases deduct original shipping. Of course this usually means that buyers find a way to claim not as described and then even the return shipping is on you and there will be no deductions or restocking fees.

Refund question

This is very disturbing cause that is NOT what the instructions say. He filled in that it was his fault, he bought the wrong thing. And I have restocking on my listings.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to change to "no refunds" if this is how Ebay lets buyers get more than they are entitled to.

It's his fault mean he will be paying for return shipping. Original shipping is generally speaking always part of a full refund.

Since you have a 10% restocking charge it should apply to a remorse return, PayPal are not going to release 10% of the funds because you have a restocking charge that "may apply", you'll have to wait until the return is completed.

You will recover what you can of the original shipping via the restocking charge.

Going to no refunds will just ensure that every return you get will be a not as described variety.

Refund question

Did you have free shipping on the item to be returned? If yes, then you will not be able to subtract the original shipping and refund item cost only. You will be refunding the total amount paid. If you had a separate shipping cost, then you can subtract the cost of original shipping from the refund for a remorse return, which it sounds like this request is.

This scenario is the exact reason why I have a separate shipping cost since I do get some remorse returns and I do not want to be out $$ for those situations.

Thank you for this. Yes, I had separate shipping on this item. I should have made that clear in my original post.

That is good! Once you approve the return and get the item back, you will be able to refund the purchase price only. Just be aware that eBay will still keep their 10% final value fee on the shipping cost you will not be refunding, however the other final value fee for the item will be reimbursed.

Thank you again. I was wondering what part of their fees would be returned. And I assume that PayPal will keep their small fee.

PayPal will refund all but the .30 transaction fee.

Thank you again. I've learned more about selling on Ebay from you and a few others on this forum than in the months I've been selling there.
