Refund failed for this order

Hi,

I canceled an order per buyer's request, and all I got was the email "Refund failed for this order".

Tried to refund it via PayPal but paypal said  "We were unable to complete this payment. Please add funds to your PayPal account and try again". The paypal balance I currently have is what the buyer paid minus the ebay sales tax minus paypal fees. How the eff do I make a full refund? Do I need to put in money first then bug ebay to credit those back to me??

Thank you.

Wow...that really screw up the whole refund system and make it super inconvenient!!

Inconvenient for sellers, but certainly not buyers.  Just a tidbit we all need to know and understand.  I do think Ebay could have done a better job about explaining this process to sellers instead of letting most of us find out by stumbling around and having issues we don't understand.

I tried to make several refunds recently and it simply says “something went wrong try again”. It seems now you must have the refund amount in your PayPal account at all times. They aren’t even withdrawing from your bank account anymore. This means I must keep thousands of extra dollars in my PayPal account at all times.

What happens if you don't choose to have a PP cash account? Wouldn't it come straight from your linked back account or CC or whatever your backup source is?

Most sellers should have a PP business account.  PP Cash Accounts are for personal Ebay accounts.  Sellers should have Business Accounts.

Re: Refund failed for this order

I have a question. After you add funds to the paypal account, how long does it take for ebay to refund payment from the paypal account back to the buyer?

Have you authorized the refund?  Did you try and process a refund but because you didn't have funds in your account, you couldn't process it?

Do you have an open Return Request or other claim in Ebay that you are trying to process the refund for?

Re: Refund failed for this order

I cancelled a transaction because the buyer wanted a refund and wanted me to start the process. So i cancelled it and then I got a email from ebay saying refund failed. I guess ebay was supposed to take $ from my account automatically but it didnt. So i guess i have to add $$ first and thats why i was wondering how long it would take for ebay to take funds from my account.

OK.  Go to your buyer's payment in your PP account.  Click on it and go into the details of that transaction.  At the top of the details, if a refund had been processed, it will note it there.  If it isn't there, then you can still refund your buyer.  Look a little further down on the screen.

You will see the Payment Details.

At the bottom of that list of details are the words "issue a refund" in blue words.  Click on that.

Now be careful on this next screen and fill in the appropriate amounts in the correct boxes.  Then process the refund.

Thank you for asking this.  I had the same situation just happen.  This is absolutely ridiculous by ebay and PayPal.  I hope the policy changes on this.

Re: Refund failed for this order

The problem is, PayPal takes days to get funds transferred from my bank to my PP account.  So the transaction is held in limbo that whole time.  Meanwhile, the buyer is getting anxious and potentially causing loss of future business.

This is a terrible policy by PayPal and ebay.

It isn't Ebay.  They have nothing to do with how fast PP transfers money.  This is all on PP.

It's a god idea to keep some funds in PP to cover these eventualities, especially since this new policy of not refunding from a backup source.

Re: Refund failed for this order

Yes, that’s good advice. But still ridiculous that PP is not refunding fees.

I opened a complaint against PayPal on CFPB (complaint ID 200421-4948691).

I encourage everyone else to do the same. This is an unfair, terrible practice by PayPal/eBay (same parent company).

While I don't like this practice by PP any better than anyone else does, they aren't doing anything wrong.  They did provide a service, which is what they do, so they got paid for services rendered.

NOPE.  Ebay and PP are two separate companies since June of 2015.  They do NOT have the "same parent company".

Re: Refund failed for this order

I don't mean to bring up an old discussion but I made my way here because I'm having the same issue as the person who originally posted. Do you really believe this? I've had this account for over 20 years now but have only sold stuff sparingly over two decades. I never keep cash in my Paypal account, and in fact it was a mess even being able to set it up to transfer money to it from my bank. After several hours of waiting for online support with a confused support person, I eventually asked a relative to send me $5 just so I could set up a PP cash account because I didn't have one and there was no way to even get the remaining money back into the account initially.

If selling on eBay is just for businesses now, that's fine but a little disappointing. I have used craigslist for a while but with the stay at home order in my state going through May 15 it wasn't really an option, and I prefer the auction model to haggling even though I get beat up by fees here.

Re: Refund failed for this order

As a casual seller, this is insanely horrible user experience that makes me less likely to sell on eBay in the future.  I sold an old $10 CPU on eBay not so much for money as just so it wouldn't go in the trash, seller realized an hour later it might not be compatible, now I have to waste my time transferring $1.27 in fees (for a sale that didn't happen!) into PayPal and then setting a reminder to process the refund in three days after ACH processes. Kafkaesque UX.
