I am confused, as this was the first refund I issued. I issued the refund to the buyer less than an hour from when the purchase was made. Total refund to buyer was 620.99. However, I owed money on the refund and ebay took out money from my VISA card.
The summary of the refund: Shipping = $100.00 , Purchase Price = $520.99 , Fee Credits = $-89.58
Refund amount you owe = $531.41
Deducted from available funds = $-429.69
and this is where I am confused, the remaining $101.72 was deducted from my VISA card. I am not sure why this is. I lost $101.72 for issuing a refund. Why were the available funds not the same amount as the total refund owed? Why did I have to pay an extra $101.72 to issue the refund?
I appreciate the help. I tried to find a similar issue on the forum, but wasn’t able to find one similar to mine. Thank you for your time.

Since the buyers payment hadn’t cleared it is still processing so. When you are refunding and there’s not sufficient funds available to pay the refund, eBay takes from the payment source you have on file to cover the refund.
When the buyer’s original payment clears that money is yours. So it all evens out.

Why did you issue a refund ?
Did you use the refund option ?
Did you cancel the sale ?
If you cancelled the sale what reason did you use?

Thank you for the information and for your time. When you say the buyer’s original payment clears, is that different from when ebay has already informed me that the buyer has paid? And will the amount deducted from my card be refunded to me?

I canceled the sale and used the refund option, specifically the no longer in stock option

Here’s an example:
Your buyer paid $620.99 for a widget this payment is pending even though you’ve refunded. You cancelled for out of stock. Your buyer got his $620.99 refunded through your available funds plus a deduction from your visa.
When your buyer’s original $620.99 payment clears that money is yours.
You are aware that canceling transactions for out of stock gives you a defect against your account. Too many of those and eBay can suspend you.

Thank you for letting me know, I was unaware of this, really glad you told me. This was the first time I had to do this. Will definitely keep in mind moving forward and avoid this at all cost.

Best wishes on your eBay journey.

You will still owe ebay fees because you cancelled as out of stock. You will owe listing fees +.30 cents
Ebay expects you to have the item you listed IN stock.

Thank you for your response, this is a good learning lesson

I see that you have an $11,000 camera for sale and since you are still a bit inexperienced with ebay, I am concerned that scammers might take advantage of you. Couple of unsolicited pieces of advice to be aware of-make sure you get a signature confirmation (for items over $750) and make sure you have enough insurance for shipping. I see you have a no returns policy but buyers can still ask for refunds and return the item if they are not satisfied, I would really hate to see something go wrong with that camera sale.
