I received a message from a person who asked where I obtained their fathers personal letters. I sent a message back saying I bought them from another dealer. They then said they were part of the family estate and not to be sold and they are notifying the authorities and Ebay because their dad's social security number is on the return address for the world to see and to please send all the letters to them for safe keeping, and they bid on two separate ones to keep them from going to strangers and will pay $15 each for my troubles, and if I can give them the name of the dealer I bought them from it would be helpful. Does anyone know what I should do regarding this situation. I have more of the letters listed right now, do I need to take them down?

I can't answer all the questions... but there was a time (not sure if you still can), that I could go on the internet and get a dead person's SSN. If the person who the letter pertains is deceased, their private info is public record.

I just received a message from another person who lives in the same state saying that the xxxxxxx letters need to be returned to his daughter.

Has anyone in this thread told you to put these people on your BBL? Do that.

You seem to get a lot of messages telling you your listings are stolen items!
OMG I remember that second one, it got SO CRAZY, family members involved in the thread and all!!
Aw but I also see some Community names I haven't seen in a while. Like where the heck is Nobody's Perfect? They used to be one of the most prolific people here!

Tell them to contact the executor of the estate about the sale.
If the letters were not specifically left to the complainant they have no more right to them than any other potential heir.
You have purchased them from a dealer? Who you are certain is careful about provenance?
When we were buying estates, the first question was about the executor and PoA.
Then it was normal for an estate (in our case usually a collection of stamps) was purchased and the payment distributed by the executor.
because their dad's social security number is on the return address.
Really?
Sounds like Daddy was perfectly okay with having his number publicly displayed to everyone who worked for USPS.

@dhbookds Perhaps you know what happened to Downunder too? I think it was Downunder-61? I miss him & I've been worried for quite awhile.

Sorry -- I find that difficult to believe. And what would be anyone's purpose in doing that?

First, stop communicating with anyone regarding this issue and definitely don’t provide the name of the dealer..you have no idea what took place in this case and avoid to take sides..eBay can’t tell you to forward documents to anyone but they can ask you to remove from sale on platform..Don’t provide your address unless they buy something and you have to ship..authorities could care less if there is SSI number on the letters..don’t be intimidated..

Whatever they say is irrelevant..you have no idea who they are and it may be estate dispute among siblings/family..if attorneys involved, let attorney contact you in writing and let attorney to find your address via eBay , assuming eBay provides it…again, authorities wouldn’t lift their finger in this case..anyway, everything sounds strange…make a copy of these letters and put it aside, just in case…😈

Honestly, remove these letters from sale to avoid any headache in the future..too many idiotic laws floating around…
09-22-2025 05:55 AM
Unless letters written by famous person, it becomes irrelevant to general public..not worth an effort unless some emotional connection…🤷

Block them all…this is pathetic..let their attorney deal with it..legal way..
