Do you think it's a benefit to have this function in ebay messages, to know when or if the message recipient has seen your message or not? Since ebay is trying to make the messages look like texts, I don't see why they shouldn't have this function as well.

I don't want buyers to see when I read their message. If I read it and can't reply right away they will be impatient and demand a reply.
I'd prefer to read messages when convenient for me, not have this info shared, and if I choose to ignore not let it be known if I'm ignoring or not reading.

There is absolutely no way would I want that.

In what way would this be a benefit and to whom?

There is already a record of the message being sent including time stamp. It doesn't matter whether a buyer reads it or not, as long as there's a record of it.

Sounds like doing a text message to someone on the cellphone or iPhone.
And wondering if they read it.
Person will read it when they read it...might even be in 3 days...LOL
So my answer is no also...don't care.

Oh man, that would be an unwelcome addition to the message system in my view. I find no benefit to anybody with a read receipt on eBay messages. If a customer has a question on one topic, that may not be the topic I respond on, so it waits for my spouse and vice versa. I would hate for one of our customers to think that we read their message and did not care enough to respond since they would be able to see it was read. We respond, but sometimes it has to wait for the correct person to respond, not everybody is patient.

You know at my work people sometimes put read receipts on messages they send to our shared mailbox so they can start demanding us to take action once they knew I've read it. I deliberately do not accept "sending a read receipt" when the pop up asks if I want to send one. Not happening. I read all messages when they come in to triage (so if I have an ongoing problem with someone I can see their reply and act on it right away because their request is the oldest in the mailbox), I'm looking for things that are urgent. My reading it does not mean I will take action on it right away.
I operate the same way on eBay, I'm at work all day but I still read messages. I generally don't reply to messages until I get home (unless I can tell someone is upset, then I might appease them with "I'm at work right now I will respond at 5pm" or whatever). I have an out of office that tells people when I respond to messages (although sometimes I get a reply back to it by someone who thinks I'm out of office for the next two months or something, somehow they know the end date on my out of office, not having received an out of office on eBay I'm not sure what that says).

I don't like that function in my text messages, which is why I disabled that function.
I wouldn't want it in my eBay messages either.
