Setting a reserve price should be abolished. The only benefit is to the seller to "test the waters" of what people are willing to pay rather than a true auction. It's a waste of time for everyone else.
If they wish to set a "reserve price," setting their starting price to that should be sufficient.

@microspender wrote:There's NO point to a reserve in eBay's store culture. Why not just set your starting price to your desired reserve price, and launch the auction from there? Newbie sellers and old-old-school sellers who still use it might think they're being clever, but realistically it only exists today as a middle finger to buyers whose time is wasted as they sit there and bid (solo or against others) until that "reserve not met" message disappears. For no reason.
If sellers want to pay extra for random options (subtitles, bold lettering, promotions, etc.) I don't care, that's not what this issue is about. As a (multi-year, top rated) seller I know it's pointless and pompous, and as a buyer I hate it and makes me think poorly of not just the... 'misguided' seller, but also eBay for keeping that outdated function alive.
Reviving a year old thread because it is still a valid issue and the arguments for reserves just completely fall flat and aren't relevant. "But real auctions have them." "They're testing the waters." smh
No.... THE OPs Issue WAS SPECIFICLY ABOUT RESERVE PRICING. Your post is irrelevant and does not answer the OP.
