Proof of Local Pickup -- issue

I run an eBay store for a non-profit bike shop and we've offered local pickup since we opened our eBay storefront in 2017. I'd guess that we sell less than 5-10 items per year this way.

I recently noticed that our seller rating had dropped from Top Rated (which we've always been) to Above Average. Turns out that our "Tracking uploaded on time and validated" percentage dropped from 99.9% to 86.09% because a local buyer (one of our loyal volunteers, no less) has bought 16 items from us in the past six weeks and that eBay can't see that I've marked them as picked up (or somesuch) -- quite irritating.

Note: he always pays via check when he comes to pick up the items. I mark that the item's been paid and been picked up in the seller dashboard and everything seems to be fine on our end.

I checked out: https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/posting-items/setting-postage-options/local-pickup?id=4181

but he (to the best of his knowledge) neither receives a QR code or a 6-digit code and I cannot for the life of me figure out where to enter such a thing even if he gave one to me. We don't use the eBay app, neither does the customer.

I've scoured the forums and see that there has been discussion (and a fair amount of grumbling and assertions that Local Pickup now requires using the eBay app) about this issue in the past year or two. Can anyone tell me if anything regarding how this "service" is supposed to work has been improved recently?

Paging @mr_lincoln  since I know he personally had some similar issues lately, so perhaps he can help.  I don't do local pickup, so am not up on exactly how that works.

Re: Proof of Local Pickup -- issue

Thank you @simply-the-best-for-you for looping me in.

@oldspokeshome322   Yes, I have rather extensive thread on this subject and like you I do NOT use the phone app nor does one of my regular Local Pick up customers so the QR code and/or 6 digit code that is supposed to be emailed are not used.  The thread however is in the Mentor area so you may not be able to access it:  https://community.ebay.com/t5/Community-Mentor-Lounge/Tracking-uploaded-on-time-and-validated-metric...

What I have learned is that if you do NOT send an invoice but then mark the item Paid for and Shipped after you have completed the Local Pick up then the system awards you one defect for the

"Tracking uploaded on time and validated"

on your Seller Dashboard.  However, those defects DO NOT AFFECT YOUR SELLER RATING, this is from an eBay message I received after calling to have the defects removed (which they did NOT do by the way) ...

"... We understand that there are some instances wherein the listings is for Local pick up or you uploaded the tracking number and shipped the item on time however it was not recorded on the carrier’s website which led to a defect. Mr. Lincoln, no worries Tracking uploaded on time and validated is not a defect and it will not affect your selling performance rating, it is just a record that this transactions, tracking was not uploaded in time. The only defects that will affect your performance are Transaction defect rate, Late shipment rate and Cases closed without seller resolution.  Furthermore, if we are going to evaluate you today, you are still one of our Top-Rated Seller. ..."

I was pretty irate when it happened to me so the very next week the same customer did another local pick up to I sent the invoice be they never paid it.  I was testing how the system worked.  I marked it Paid for once the pick up was completed but NOT shipped.  That fixed the issue of not getting the defect.

You need to contact eBay and ask them remove those defects because they should NOT be negatively affecting your Seller Rating.  However, be prepared to have them reject your request like they did mine.  The reply above that I got was one of those "canned" statements the reps look up on their knowledge base, change names and send it off.

Here is what kyle@ebay stated on my thread about this issue

"I'm fairly confident you'll still have the option to mark as picked up even without the app/QR code.  We've reached out to one of our product teams to try to get some clarification though.

Kyle"

My next Local Pick up adventure will be this Friday where a Buyer actually paid for their purchase through eBay.  I told him to bring the 6 digit code that they will email him but I am not holding out any hope that they will remember and since I don't use the app the QR code is a waste of good electrons.

One of my main issues with this entire process is that I get the distinct feeling that eBay is more concerned with Seller Metrics then the "Buying experience" for the customer AND I do NOT feel trusted by eBay on this whole Local pick up thing.

I have a state tax ID so reporting and remitting sales on payments made in cash, by check, etc. was never an issue ... I was doing that LONG BEFORE EBAY STARTED COLLECTING SALES TAX.

Was "awards" their word, or yours?  I certainly hope it wasn't theirs.

And I don't understand how you can upload a valid tracking number, if it is a local pick up.

@biggymoe   "Awards" was my word, it seemed more polite and professional then "slapped me with" or some other less then positive type statement ...

With regard to your last statement keep in mind eBay is fixated on Seller metrics despite the fact that many of them are subjective ... and whether or not a "defect' affects one's Seller rating or not some simply should NEVER HAPPEN in the first place ... especially when it comes to Local Pick up transactions ... eBay should just throw those transactions out of the whole Seller metric mix because they sure can;t figure out how to set the programming up to handle what happens.

eBay's preference for Local Pick up transactions is to have Buyers purchase through their site for the MBG and protection ... while that may be beneficial on some things it is NOT on what I sell.  I do "maybe" a half dozen per year ... some years more and other less.  So lets just pick 6 and my total sales for last year were about 1241 ... so the math works out to about 0.48% .... ahhhh, that's less than ONE Percent ... as a matter of fact ITS LESS THEN 1/2 OF 1 PERCENT!  Certainly not worth including in any Metrics as I am sure a lot would agree.

I thought it was you being nice and was hoping you wouldn't take it the wrong way.

I, too, have very few local pick ups.  Maybe one, or two, a year and none lately.  But I do recall having a problem trying to get them marked correctly.

@biggymoe

LOL, it pays to have a "Teflon shell" here ... I never mind an opposing opinion, that's the nature of "discussion" ... I've even learned from other opinions and in some instances changed mine because of what others have shared.

So now I am waiting for my Friday L-P and if I don't get a 6 digit Secret Agent code from the Buyer I guess my funds will be held for up to 30 days ... even if I mark the item shipped ... we'll see, another experiment with eBay programming ...

@mr_lincoln @biggymoe

Geez two of my favorite peeps here! My question is why not download the ebay app on your phone? Makes life so easy when doing local pickup, the QR code pops,  buyer holds up their phone to seller and sellers app reads it....than both phones get married and live happily,  opps getting ahead of myself 😆 🤣

@silverstatetreasureboxes   Oh I get that for sure but having the phone app should not be a prerequisite for completing a transaction ... especially when they represent less than 1 % of total sales ... and the Buyer may not be comfortable doing the phone thing ... and I think it is a BIG inconvenience to ask a Buyer to get the 6 digit code emailed to them (even though I did, we'll see what happens) ... to me asking a Buyer to do ANYTHING above paying for their item is a very, very big negative and does NOT "enhance the Buying experience" ...

Re: Proof of Local Pickup -- issue

I like how the local pickup scan works, or code if lacking smartphone.

I don't think it's too much of an inconvenience that they get a code, especially since they are paying most likely electronically.

This really helps stop disputes and fraud.

Thank you for that comment.

The problem with that is, I am as old as dirt, and am technologically challenged.  I still operate with a flip phone, make a call, receive a call, that's all I want.  My grandkids often suggest that I should join the 21st century, but I am still fighting it.  I long for the return of the 1950's, the greatest decade, my personal opinion.

@biggymoe   They assume every Seller should be using technology like most of the 30 somethings who work there ...

Re: Proof of Local Pickup -- issue

I do have the ebay app on my phone, but I have no idea how to use the qr thing. All of my items are immediate payment required so at least both buyer and seller have proof of payment. After pickup i mark that it was picked up. On wasn't picked up for months and it wasn't an issue since paid for already. Try that.
