I would like to learn from some of you what your experience has been with paying extra for promoting listings.  What exactly do you get from the extra fee, and does it help sales.  Thanks.

It's really hard to measure because you don't know if the item sold because it was promoted or if it would have sold anyway had it not been promoted.

I do both promoted and send offers to buyers and the latter seems to work better.

Or if it didn't sell because eBay has fouled the search up so much with Promoted items showing when they shouldn't that no one could find your item even though you're paying extra. (sigh)   Promoted listings can hurt more than help. So... fair warning.   I just searched for "grateful dead poster 1987" and the top results weren't posters and they were from the wrong bands.

Some additional personal observations:

Promoted is wasting money for hot items that sell quickly and easily on their own (i.e. iphones)

Promoted is wasting money for obscure or one of a kind items. There is no sense in promoting an item if it's the only one or one of few.

Promoted is best applied to items that SHOULD sell fairly well but have a lot of competition.

Lastly, promotion means nothing if your item is not priced properly or competitively.
