Promo Sales - What's the point?

I am running a BOGO sale promo and not only can a buyer not tell from search results, but even clicking into the listing the promo banner is WAY down the bottom.

I can't even BEGIN to understand how they think this is 'helpful' for driving sales.

Re: Promo Sales - What's the point?

I agree it is frustrating - but I revised all my listings and added the promo to the title

@Anonymous.

Then how about suggesting they put something on SEARCH to SHOW there's a Promo running on an item?

Can you or anyone at ebay explain how y'all separate causality events/sales from mere correlation events/sales, specifically concerning placement of the promotion banner?

100% agree. Anything other than markdowns (which show the discounted price in search results), are essentially hidden from most buyers, since a small percentage scroll to the bottom.

Ebay doesn't want to talk about it either. Myself and others have brought it up in the weekly chat and here on the boards, and besides the initial canned response from @Anonymous any references to this issue go ignored. Several asked about it for Bob's live broadcast yesterday, but it went ignored there, too.

Hi @hioctane62, I apologize if I wasn't able to address your question in detail! I can confirm that this change is an intentional change and not a site issue - we tested this out last year and found that by moving the promotional banner lower in the listing there was a corresponding increase to sales for those sellers. This may be due to potential buyers scrolling down to the description to review details without seeing the banner near the top. I've passed along feedback about this change and confirmed in the Community that we keep a close eye on adjustments like this to ensure there is no negative impact. As I'm sure you can understand, we do not benefit from any changes that result in reduced sales for our sellers and would make appropriate changes if this led to a loss in sales. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to let me know!

Did you verify that this 'increase in sales for those sellers' were multiple item purchases, which is what the promos are usually for?

And "this may be due to ......." implies you really don't know why. So my question above stands.

If you wanted to run a test, why wouldnt you allow a seller to select where in the listing that promo banner appears?

And with what types of products did you test on?

Hi @d-k_treasures, I'm not able to share the full details of this test and the information that was gathered. I do want to clarify that in most situations, I won't provide definitive answers such as "this was because of" when posting on a thread. The use of terms such as may, typically, generally, in most situations, etc. are a result of there being a great number of factors that play into any test, transaction or other situations discussed here on the boards. I ask that my commitment to speaking to general situations with general terms not be interpreted as a lack of confidence or knowledge on my part. Since it is not possible to speak for every single buyer who reviewed a listing and made a purchase as to a singular motivation, I have chosen not to use terms that would indicate a singular reason. My statement about what may have been a contributing factor serves is only an example of one of the many possible reasons why moving this promotional banner increased sales. I can confirm that we had reason to believe this change would benefit the Community and increase sales.

As for allowing choice in these tests, to adequately identify the true impact of any changes, it is important that we eliminate as many variables as possible. Making an announcement for a small test, allowing buyers or sellers to choose if they participate or allowing for the selection of options within a test can dramatically skew the data that we receive. While we certainly do discuss large scale experimentation, smaller or less impactful initiatives do require that we preserve the objectivity of the results as much as possible.

I strive to be as transparent and as informative when discussing topics like this, but am not able to answer every question. What I can share, I am happy to provide here. I also am committed to passing along any feedback that I receive and encourage you to continue voicing your opinion on any changes, policies or procedures that you feel could be improved. The comments made here on the boards are valuable beyond measure and I'm happy to be a part of gathering this kind of information so we can work on improvements slight_smile

Re: Promo Sales - What's the point?

Poor guy. I mean that sincerely.

Are you aware that ebay's medical insurance covers massages and accupunture?

Every four or five years and you're entitled to a month sabbatical. Wouldn't Cabo be nice?

Go. Maybe when you come back, ebay won't be here. Imagine that for a moment. How would that make you feel?

Re: Promo Sales - What's the point?

trinton@ebay Please Please Please then DO REPORT for us that there are MORE of us that are LOSING SALES due to this change.  I personally have not seen one posting that has stated an uptick.  Many of us use the promotions (all types) on a weekly basis (implying not rarely).  I am sorry, but the average Buyer just does NOT scroll to the end of a listing, especially if they are using the mobile app.  They just don't.  We wouldn't get the questions everyday that can be answered IN the listing if they were reading.

This change is seriously hurting a vast number of your Sellers (including me).  Our store fees aren't going down, but our sales are due to something we didn't change (again) or have any say in (again) and don't have any options to work with (move/placement, etc.) (again)
