Price Gouging

Do these sellers realize that price gouging is illegal? I mean, $1,000.00 for 1 ounce of USED hand sanitizer while our nation is facing virus that is killing people is not just wrong, it's illegal. Then there is the fact that as fast as eBay is taking them down they are slipping by, by relisting them time & time again. With the above mentioned item being used, it is potentially not safe anyways. I just don't get how these people are going out buying up as much as they can, keeping it out of the hands of those who fall in the at risk groups & then thinking they will get rich while people are at risk of dying! I just find it really sad that some go that low in our nation. I just really want to know why are these items still for sell on eBay & still being allowed to be posted?

Re: Price Gouging

When the US caught on to the need for medical and sanitation items to be diverted to hospitals and first responders, Ebay could have made fairly easy changes to their program to prohibit these items. They chose not too and the optics are terrible for their brand.

The listing you are concerned with is currently at 2.75, no one is getting rich off that listing.  On an auction, from what I've seen, Ebay doesn't seem to take action until or unless the time gets to a ridiculous $$ value.  So that is most likely why it is still active.

Another thing that may interest you is that even when a listing actually gets sold for an outrageous $$ value, Ebay can and does cancel those transactions.  They don't keep the FVF either.

I know it is easy to blame Ebay for everything and certainly they most likely could do a better job on items that should be removed but they have removed many and continue to do so.  It is unlikely that no matter what Ebay does they won't make everyone happy.  We are a diverse group of people with all kinds of opinions and observations.

That listing should have been removed simply because hand sanitizer is supposed to be banned on ebay, NOT because its at a low price right now. Look at the picture. Its hand sanitizer not soap.

Yes that listing is at 2.75 right now but obviously you are dreaming if you think ebay will be able to jump in and remove it when the price gets too high. Ebay  most likely wont be able to remove it in time because most likely the price wont hit obscene levels until the last few seconds of the auction. If you have ever sold anything through an auction that was a highly wanted item you would know by now that the people paying crazy prices wait until the last few seconds of the auction to bid. Please tell me your magic solution how ebay can jump in and end the auction in time when the gouged prices don't occur until the last seconds of the auction.

There is no need to get rude.  I simply shared some information with you and some of my opinions.  You don't need to agree with me, but you also don't need to be rude.

Maybe this information will help you to get a better understanding.

I wasnt trying to be rude at all but if anyone was rude it was you telling me "Maybe this information will help you to get a better understanding" and then listing a bunch of things for me to read as if youre the teacher and Im a grade school student. If not rude, then definitely condescending. Anyway have a good weekend and stay safe and healthy.

It wasn't meant that way.  I did try and lessen your need to read so I ID'd the specific posts on each for this subject we are discussing.  You expressed a desire to know more so I provided you with some information directly from Ebay.  Of course completely your choice if you want to read it or not.  But it would answer some of your concerns.

Re: Price Gouging

While ebay is allowing the sale of protective gear, the people that pick and package the food you are eating are doing it barefaced and barehanded without any sort of protection. Not many farm-workers are searching ebay for the best deals on protective gear, so please keep than in mind when you have  your next salad or fresh vegetables.

“I think in general face masks should be attainable because of food safety reasons,” said Mariana Barrera, the office manager and a managing member at Empire Farm Labor Contractor in Salinas.

Barrera added that healthcare workers should get priority when it came to masks, but farmworkers shouldn’t have to go without. Her company has had a tough time finding sufficient masks, she said."

They are not available because people are buying them and putting them on ebay to make a buck, thanks ebay.

Re: Price Gouging

I suspect eBay is using a blanket email to all sellers whether the actual reason is price gouging or simply listing a banned item. I do believe eBay should be stating more clearly when providing the reason for listings being removed as I do realize not all listings are listed at prices that would normally be associated with price gouging.

However, the very fact that sellers continue to defy the ban by trying to justify their listings using reasonable and/or low prices does not excuse sellers actions. Listing and re-listing items for which a ban is in place and sellers know the ban is in place but continue to find ways to justify listing the items, goes against the terms of use of this site.

Most Sellers who are complaining about their listings being removed are sellers who don't normally sell these products and have just started listing said items in recent days, and/or past couple of weeks and are frustrated because they are the ones getting caught.

It's time to stop questioning the rules here and get on with selling your usual products, rather than trying to engage in listing your "good cause" items that eBay has decided to put on a ban list and are now prohibited.

This is eBay's site, so it's eBay's rules and policies> eBay does not have to justify their actions - they are in charge and they have made the rules. If sellers don't like the rules and policies & want to circumvent those rules and policies, then those sellers need to be held accountable for their actions.

@connies251

Ebay could be doing a much better job wording what they are communicating to sellers that are having listings removed.

This is NOT personal.  Ebay announced on March 5th that face masks were banned for the time being on Ebay.  So they are just trying to get these listings off the site.  But this is in no way a personal attack on you.  I know it feels that way but it isn't.

Re: Price Gouging

Then I would like to know why there are so many face mask still listed. Also they should say no mask are to be sold on eBay, not that I am price gouging. I got no email saying not to sell them on eBay just that I am price gouging.

I don't disagree with you.  In fact I've said the same thing many times on this thread and others.

Bought two boxes of N95 masks today out of pocket and dropped them off at the local fire and police station. Not one went on Ebay.

Re: Price Gouging

We are still in desperate need of masks for hospital workers, senior living facilities, fire and police departments. We are constantly sourcing them  mainly from good Samaritans who are switching  to cloth masks and giving up their masks for the greater good.  We have a large group of people sewing masks to give away,  paying for everything out of pocket.

Then we have Ebay, with a steady source of masks if you are willing to pay for them. I've been an Ebay member for a long time, but in my eyes, I now lump Ebay in with tobacco and oil companies as corporate bad guys.
