Price Gouging

Do these sellers realize that price gouging is illegal? I mean, $1,000.00 for 1 ounce of USED hand sanitizer while our nation is facing virus that is killing people is not just wrong, it's illegal. Then there is the fact that as fast as eBay is taking them down they are slipping by, by relisting them time & time again. With the above mentioned item being used, it is potentially not safe anyways. I just don't get how these people are going out buying up as much as they can, keeping it out of the hands of those who fall in the at risk groups & then thinking they will get rich while people are at risk of dying! I just find it really sad that some go that low in our nation. I just really want to know why are these items still for sell on eBay & still being allowed to be posted?

You are incorrect, very little frightens or scares me after 20 plus years of military service. You are incorrect in thinking none of us have faced this. I have dealt with black marketing in some places that made this look like a walk in the park. I have seen some of the worst of humanity and the greed that takes place is something that will stay with me forever.  My guess is you've had a nice little life behind the keyboard, so get out from behind your computer and spend some time talking to the nurses at a hospital or the first reponders out there to get a feeling of their fear and anger and then take a look at the items being black marketed on Ebay and see how you feel then.

Really.  Even though this is the first modern day Pandemic of this size you are going to try and tell us that you have faced this before.  That anyone has.  You knew what I was speaking to and you AGAIN are trying to twist what I said to meet your needs of making a point.

Let me add, you know NOTHING about me.  Just because we are having a bit of a conversation where we don't agree on much you continually try to insult and dismiss me.  That tells a lot about you.  I can handle a debate or discussion with anyone as long as they stay civil.  As I don't thing everyone must agree with me or see things the same way I do.  I can see that is not your desire.

Mam... they aren't listening... and haven't been listening for days.  It might be best to just ignore and go on... They are only going to read what they want to read (hear what they want to hear) no matter what the actual facts are in the situation.

I hope you and yours are safe and healthy.

Re: Price Gouging

How about sellers that are selling toilet paper that is not as advertised and the price was outrageous. On top of that the packaging came straight from China. When the package arrived and I saw the item and packaging, due to the corona virus I threw it all away. How do we advise ebay on these sellers.

Re: Price Gouging

Dear quinger86,

I agree! It just saddens me that lives are being lost & all people care about is the money. It saddens me that people are not caring about the lives being lost because of their greed. The nation is in crisis & there is only a hand full of us that are trying to do what we can to help. It's not like I'm going to stop reporting these sellers, but there are so many sellers & so many products. My recent message was about Lysol, but I see that my pictures were removed. It's like it is just being swept under the rug. It's like to be able to purchase these items to try to stay alive, you have to have money & if you don't have the money you may as well die anyway. eBay was showing that they cared a month ago & now it's like they like the money more then the thought of saving lives. It's just really making more people the way it sthink it's alright & that they might as well start doing it too. Some had understood a month ago & stopped selling the hand sanitizer. But, now it's like the flood gates have been opened & death is ok if they have money in their pockets. A month ago I spoke the an eBay concierge & she made me feel like we were ALL working together to stop this from happening. But, now it's like it doesn't matter to anyone. It's like you can't get a hold of anyone with eBay & they are like people are dying without these products, oh well. With the way it is going it won't matter if they are reported, because for each one reported 5 more will pop up. Their business is all computer based, so they would be able to stop it fast if they really wanted to! With people selling so many other things they could afford to miss out on a few bucks during this time. If they just took the main names of these products like Lysol, Purell, Clorox, Pledge, Mr. Clean & so on they could stop it right off! But, instead they are only using COVID 19 or coronavirus which isn't going to do anything. People are now just using HIV, Aids, SARS, H1N1 & such to list their products so they can be found. But, they generally use the product's name in the listing. Or words like sanitizer, disinfectant or cleaner, which could still be used to find these products & would work better then COVID 19 or coronavirus! I just find it heart breaking! Ok, sorry I'm done. Thank you for your message!

Re: Price Gouging

It is not the first modern day pandemic, it may be the first that you're aware of.  It's the third I've been involved with.  I've seen supply ships pull into the docks and watched as the black marketeers moved product off the ship before it got to the government officials. We had to stand by because it was not our fight, maybe they we're "authorized vendors" like Ebay. I've seen field hospitals performing surgery without proper anesthetic because it was only available on the black market. So please speak for yourself as you calmly talk about letting people die because the sellers on Ebay are authorized.

Re: Price Gouging

Those are probably from "authorized" vendors, you know not those trying to rip people off, just trying to make a buck off of desperate people. They will move to food soon as necessary.

@ninjajoe.123

It's not being swept under the rug... eBay is pulling tens of thousands of these types of listings daily and have been for weeks... the problem is there are  several million sellers on eBay, and way way to many of them are going out of their way to be stupid at this time.

Best thing you can do is what most of us on these boards are doing... spend a few minutes (or hours if you wish) reporting each and every listing... eBay will get to it even if the item has been sold by the time they do get to it... they have been yanking the money back out of the sellers accounts and banning the accounts (find the various threads, they are out there).

They are not going to shut down all of eBay because a few thousand are being stupid...

Re: Price Gouging

I also disagree.  Price gouging covers all articles, goods, etc for which a person could obtain an exorbitant, unreasonable, and excessive price during a period of time that these things are in high demand and in short supply due to something happening in the marketplace.  Keep in mind too that these sellers are using the Ebay selling platform as well.  It's not like selling something to your "neighbor" as many of these stupid sellers say.  After all, your neighbor would probably punch you in the face if you tried that with him!!!  Nasty sellers trying to get away with this.  Much better just to report the item.  Don't try and explain it to them or reason with them.  Take care all!

Again, I did NOT say that.

Re: Price Gouging

It seems that Ebay is "selectively" enforcing its policy. They have blocked listings that contain keywords such as "masks". Unfortunately they have not used the same standard to block the model numbers of various types. A quick search of 3M 8511, 8210 or 9210 results in 100's of listings. While it is certainly difficult to catch all listings many obvious policy violations are allowed to continue/complete. Several of these sales were 3 day auctions. I find it impossible to believe that in that time frame, no one had reported it. If the only explanation for this is an inability to catch all listings in violation then perhaps they should suspend sales of all items until software/coding updates can be made. Just my personal opinion!

Yes, unless 2009 was before your time. A little education is a wonderful thing...

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic originated in the United States before spreading around the world, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A later study suggested it was first diagnosed in humans in Mexico. The CDC estimated that from April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010, there were 60.8 million H1N1 cases, with 274,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the U.S. alone. They also estimate that worldwide, 151,700 to 575,400 people died from (H1N1)pdm09 during the first year. Unusually, about 80% of the deaths were in people younger than 65 years of age.
