Price Gouging

Do these sellers realize that price gouging is illegal? I mean, $1,000.00 for 1 ounce of USED hand sanitizer while our nation is facing virus that is killing people is not just wrong, it's illegal. Then there is the fact that as fast as eBay is taking them down they are slipping by, by relisting them time & time again. With the above mentioned item being used, it is potentially not safe anyways. I just don't get how these people are going out buying up as much as they can, keeping it out of the hands of those who fall in the at risk groups & then thinking they will get rich while people are at risk of dying! I just find it really sad that some go that low in our nation. I just really want to know why are these items still for sell on eBay & still being allowed to be posted?

Each listing has a "Report this listing" button.  Choose the banned items reasons.

Report as many listings like that as you want!  I sat the other night and reported a couple dozen listings. I'm thinking ebay is overwhelmed and can't keep up with the scammers so maybe reporting is a help, I don't know. I know I got some satisfaction out of it!!  😃

Thank you! I probably would get some satisfaction from that as well! Good way to go about helping eBay as well!

You can make your own hand sanitizer, it is not necessary to drop a grand on an ounce of used hand sanitizer. You can make 100 gallons of your own sanitizer for that amount of money. Price gouging laws apply only to essential goods during a temporary emergency such as gasoline, fuels, food, clothing, shelter, medicine and medical devices. It does not apply to hand sanitizer or wet wipes, those are not considered essential goods. The price gouging laws exist so that in a state of emergency all citizens rich or poor will have the financial ability to drive their car, purchase a hotel or some type of accommodations, acquire food and water, get their needed medicines and buy coats and other types of clothing to survive a disaster. Price gouging laws do not apply to hand sanitizers or wet wipes or any other common consumer product, market demand sets the prices for non essential items.

EBay is now banning sales of surgical masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes in response to price gouging from sellers taking advantage of the coronavirus outbreak.

Merchants on the site have been offering Purell hand sanitizer and Lysol wipes for three or four times their normal prices. But on Thursday, eBay began removing items.

Affected items include sales for N95 and N100 mouth masks, as well as products that mention coronavirus, COVID-19, or 2019nCOV in their titles or descriptions. “These listings may violate applicable US laws or regulations, eBay policies, and exhibit unfair pricing behavior for our buyers,” the e-commerce provider said in a notice, which also cites a company rule that forbids sellers from profiting from “human tragedy, or suffering.

The company made the announcement after Amazon also began combating price gouging amid more confirmed coronavirus cases. According to Reuters, Amazon took down more than 1 million products from sale in recent weeks over inflated prices and inaccurate claims the items could defend against the illness.

However, both companies are having trouble completely stamping out the problem. On eBay, you can still find Purell hand sanitizer, Lysol wipes, and N95 masks being sold at exorbitant prices, ranging from $35 to $100 per pack.

On Amazon, many of the same items are out of stock. However, third-party merchants on the site have been offering the items at a steep markup. For instance, one seller is offering a 3-pack of 1 fluid ounce Purell hand sanitizer for $59 when the original cost was at $7.99.

The price gouging prompted US Senator Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) on Wednesday to call on Amazon to do more to address the problem. “No one should be allowed to reap a windfall from fear and human suffering,” he wrote in a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

In a statement to PCMag, Amazon said: "There is no place for price gouging on Amazon. We are disappointed that bad actors are attempting to artificially raise prices on basic need products during a global health crisis and, in line with our long-standing policy, have recently blocked or removed tens of thousands of offers. We continue to actively monitor our store and remove offers that violate our policies."

Due to regulatory restrictions across the United States, we have chosen to ban certain items listed on our site.
Effective immediately, eBay will block new listings and start to remove listings that sell:
Masks including N95/N100 and surgical masks
Hand Sanitizer/Gel
Disinfecting Wipes
We will continue to monitor the evolving situation and quickly remove any listing that mentions COVID-19, coronavirus, 2019nCoV (except books) in the title or description.
These listings may violate applicable US laws or regulations, eBay policies, and exhibit unfair pricing behavior for our buyers.
To learn more about the eBay policies, we invite you to read our three most relevant policies on this topic: Prescription and over-the-counter drugs policy, Disaster and Tragedy policy, Search manipulation policy.
We will continue to communicate updates through this announcement board, so please stay informed here.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by Coronavirus.
As always, thanks for selling on eBay.

You are allowed to, we are entitled to our beliefs, but those are the actual laws as they are written. They don't apply to all consumer goods and services. Neither the FBI nor local authorities will arrest or fine anyone for overpriced Purell. You can report them to E-Bay and quite possibly E-Bay will remove the listing as it is their playground but they will not involve law enforcement in those cases.

e-commerce have rules that apply to sellers online. Not to mention eBay rules that also need to be followed by sellers. If they are stating in posts to places like the Los Angeles Times & other forms of post that they will be removing these items, then something is being broken.

Forbidding sellers from profiting from "human tragedy, or suffering" is a GREAT policy!

With the CDC telling the people to use hand sanitizers as a part of trying to keep from spreading this sickness the world is facing, maybe the people breaking the rules should get a message from the authorities?

A quick look at solds and plenty are getting through. Maybe eBay should watch the solds and auto cancel the items they have banned leaving the seller with the nonrefundable PayPal fee as a penalty. About $30 on a $1000. not that that bottle will sell. How does used sanitizer come anyways? Is it still in the bottle at least?lol
