Price Gouging

Do these sellers realize that price gouging is illegal? I mean, $1,000.00 for 1 ounce of USED hand sanitizer while our nation is facing virus that is killing people is not just wrong, it's illegal. Then there is the fact that as fast as eBay is taking them down they are slipping by, by relisting them time & time again. With the above mentioned item being used, it is potentially not safe anyways. I just don't get how these people are going out buying up as much as they can, keeping it out of the hands of those who fall in the at risk groups & then thinking they will get rich while people are at risk of dying! I just find it really sad that some go that low in our nation. I just really want to know why are these items still for sell on eBay & still being allowed to be posted?

Re: Price Gouging

If eBay is shutting the call centers down who is monitoring the listings.  Have you seen the prices for Lysol  withother surface cleaners, and Bath and Body hand sanitizer products?

OK, I'm going to say this one last time.

No one is getting rich. No one is paying 1K for hand sanitizer (or 1K for toilet paper, I saw that not long ago). People aren't that brand of crazy, there are better solutions than spending money on a consumable like that.

What's happening is sport bidders are bidding the prices up (so it ends with a bidder), and causing the sellers all sorts of grief because they are assessed fees, don't get paid, etc, etc, etc.

The people bidding do not WANT the item, they want to interfere with the seller price gouging during an emergency. (I saw this right after 9/11 with all the newspapers that were posted that ended for tens of thousands of dollars by people driving up the bid).

Re: Price Gouging

mam98031 with all due respect i don't understand why you accuse me of making serious allegations ? Serious allegations about what exactly? ??? i don't understand where your coming from

My point was if its banned then shouldn't it also be banned for non US sellers also.?

When i made the post there were dozens of hand sanitizers listed by Chinese sellers for sale and 44 of them had been sold just in the last hour according to Ebay blurb on the listing.... i haven't checked hand sanitizer listings since I made that post .

US sellers have had their stock pulled and rightly so. i was not interested in price gouging thats up to buyers to decide how much $$$ they want to spend my point was if it's a banned product did the ban only apply to the US as i saw plenty of chinese listings.

Re: Price Gouging

You got to be blind if you can’t see how people are selfishly gouging toilet paper prices. The bad part about it, is that EBay is allowing it.

Re: Price Gouging

There have been numerous threads regarding price gouging;  There have been posters who didn't seem to think that this practice wasn't something eBay could do anything about and some defended the sellers engaged in this practice.  I say make a list of  sellers that are in your state and submit them to your government  officials.  And before you jump and claim these items are essentials see the notice regarding a list of items covered under price gouging laws I received from our local District Attorney.   I removed my city's name information but you should have seen similar messages from your local officials.

The call center was never responsible for monitoring listings, so no problem there.

@kateinthe26th

You had stated "Only US sellers selling hand sanitizer have had their listings pulled from what i can see."  And it simply isn't true.  Ebay has and continues to remove the listings that violate the policy on a regular basis.  Since they started the ban there have been 1,000's and 1,000's of listings removed by sellers in all countries, not just the USA.  Your posts made is seem like Ebay is favoring China and allowing their listings to remain.  But many of them have been removed too.  Maybe when you view it, it seems different.  But keep in mind that when you look it is a snapshot in time and not at all representative of all the work Ebay has done over the past week and the sheer volume of listings they have removed.

Re: Price Gouging

Try searching "toilet paper" On Friday there were around 20,000 listings.  Tuesday night 18,000.... now we are over 20,000 again.   I can't say ebay is not trying but what I can say is what they are doing is not working.  They have to take stronger measures or they will find those fees are going to be paid back to the states and plenty more.  There is a reason amazon and online walmart stopped this abuse. Keep reporting this to the state attorney general's office.  This is why we continue to see stock out in our local stores, these people doing this on ebay are using this as a means to profit and cause more fear and panic as important daily items are scarce.

I have no information on if Ebay is actively going after TP listings or not.  It isn't among the banned items Ebay previously announced and I haven't seen any updates to that announcement.

it would be a very good question for the Weekly Chat that happens a little later today as it is a concern.

Do keep in mind that as has often happened with the banned items, the sellers get creative and as Ebay closes some listings, they create a new selling account and list in a different category to try and hide from Ebay's eyes so to speak for as long as they can.

If TP isn't an essential for life, how do you wipe your butt after you deficate? Do you use your hand or a washcloth or paper towels? You make no sense saying that TP is not a necessity of life.

I've travelled the world... TP is only available in "western" type countries. I've never seen TP in a restroom in Asia (except Singapore), Africa, or the Middle East. They give you a hose that you use to spray water - doesn't matter if you miss and get yourself wet, it's so hot outside your clothes will dry very fast. I used to have a tenant form Iran, he kept a milk jug to fill with water in the bathroom. He didn't use TP. (Note, there's some places like Japan that I'm sure have TP in restrooms, but I've never been there... I have been to 50 countries in total).

Re: Price Gouging

You are absolutely wrong. Toilet paper and hand sanitizer are covered under price gouging.  Notice we received from our police department.

Re: Price Gouging

Again you are wrong.  Price is determined by what the normal retail market price was before the emergency arose.  Example,  my Scott Mega Roll toilet paper was under $5 for a 12 pack.  Price is not determined by what has occurred due to price gouging during the crisis.

Re: Price Gouging

Since I'm retired and  my family  doesn't want me to leave the house I've been binge watching TV.  Meanwhile  I have been reporting price gouging listings by the hundreds.  I used a different account where I do not sell on as I sent some of these A#$h0le$  that live in our community a message that I was going to report them to our district attorney. You can imagine the responses.  😜   In truth  I have a list of the sellers that were price gouging and plan to submit the local ones to the DA's office. They can't hide the completed transactions.
