Possible scam?

So I am a new seller,

I listed an item for 25 dollars.

A buyer contacted me, he is interested but want more photographs.

He send me this message:

"Awesome thanks, .. I want it shipped to my cousin as a Christmas gift.. I would like you to also get an eBay gift card of $400 and include it in the package before shipment. I am a US navy officer so I wont able to do that, so i will ad $500 to the payment $400 for the card and $50 for shipping and $50 for gas and stress. Are you cool with that?"

I mean, it sounds like I can get a little bit of extra cash, but whenever anything is too good to be true it is always better to be cautious

What do you think?

Re: Possible scam?

Oh. Thank you for posting this. I am a new seller and I received this message for the item that I listed for sale. It is interesting that it is more than 2 years since you have posted this scam but the scammer is still active in Ebay because he emailed me via Ebay saying that he has a note for me regarding his purchase noted in his Ebay profile. He will pay after he receive answer to his questions. When I checked his profile, he had "100% positive feedback" with thousands of positive feedback for several years. In his profile page, he had written his cellphone number and had asked me to text him since he has some questions regarding the item. I did so and he wrote the following message, "---I wanted it shipped to my cousin address in Ontario as a birthday gift, I would like you to also get an apple card of $500 and include it in the package before shipment. I am US Navy officer so I won't be able to do that, I will add $600 to the payment, $500 for the gift card, $50 for shipping and $50 for gas/stress. Are you cool with that?"....... after some back and forth, I sensed that he/she might be a scammer and said no to his request. Then I tried to google his scam and SURPRISINGLY, I came across your post....Thank God, I did not go with the shipment! Not sure, what will he/she do with the purchase now? He has bought but not paid yet.

He will not pay. The reason for his wanting you to text him was to give him an off-eBay way to send you fake payment and shipping notifications. If he really did hit the payment button on your listing, you would be getting shipment notifications from eBay actually in your eBay account. What you have here is a standard scammer who is not actually going to buy anything.

Just stop responding. Assuming that your item remains Unpaid for four full days (i.e. 96 hours) from the time of purchase, you will then be able to cancel the sale using the reason of Buyer Did Not Pay. (You do not get that option until the standard 96-hour window for payment has elapsed.)

Add the scammer's ID to your Blocked Buyer List (here). Listing as Fixed Price with the Immediate Payment Required option selected will prevent this particular waste of time in the future.
