Did you mean:

Phishing Scheme

So I am pretty sure I just sent my item to a person who was scamming. Did I just lose my item and all the money for it? What do I do now?

The first thing you need to do is provide a few more details so somebody can answer your question.

You haven't given us enough details to even begin to try to answer that.

Unless you sold it under a different account, I don't see anything sold, completed or currently listed on this one. Did you take if off the platform and sell outside of eBay when you received a message that looked like it came from eBay?

I got an email saying that a payment was made so I sent the package, but then because I got an email from him that seemed off and so I don’t think he actually paid and now he’s got my item.

If that's what happened, you got scammed.

Sorry.

So as Red noticed... you took the sale off the platform? If so, the platform can't help you now. Bummer...

Old scam, unfortunately.  How did they get your email?

That's unfortunate. Never take communications off eBay @amamor-9697 .

Forward the fake payment email to spoof@ebay.com

Find the eBay message where they asked you to take comms off eBay and report it.

If you have a transaction sitting on your orders page here you can cancel with the reason "buyer  didn't pay".

If the package is still in transit and not delivered, you can attempt to file a package intercept with the carrier. But since you said, "he's got my item," I'm assuming it's too late to retrieve it and you're out on this one. 😞

It was a fake payment.  Never take any item off of the eBay platform.  It's a violation and could cause you to loose your account.

I got an email saying that a payment was made...

@amamor-9697

Did you fall for some excuse to contact this person off eBay either by text, calling, or using your regular email client?   If you did, then likely you were scammed.  The "text me" scammers don't pay.  They send phony notifications saying that you were paid in hopes you don't know to check your eBay account to see if the payment is really there.

Yeah, I hope that guy gets arrested some day.

If you sent package by USPS you can pay fee to have "package intercepted" and returned to you.   Believe USPS fee is about $15 but there if no guarantee they will be able to intercept package in time.

I hadn’t ever sold on eBay before so I emailed them because I had a question, so now I just feel really dumb. Never going to do that again, learned my lesson the hard way.

Look at it like my grandma explained it... "Experience is something you get just after  you need it." Hang in there.
