PayPal Case Opened by International Buyer - GTC Listings were Converted to Worldwide Shipping

Good Afternoon -

I've never been a "poster" but this has me so stressed out I have to mention it.  When my listings were converted to GTC, it wasn't my favorite, but I rolled with the changes and made it work.  What I didn't realize, was that shipping was changed from US only to Worldwide.  Someone purchased a NWT Alexander Wang top last week and it was sent to Israel.  It arrived and I thought everything was fine until this morning, when I had an open case in PayPal for an "Item Not as Described."  The buyer is claiming the top was used, when it was NEVER worn -- the original tags were still attached.  The price was $49.85 including free shipping to KY (It was sent to Global Shipping from that location).  I realize this isn't a lot of money but there are 2 problems:  1. the bogus case and 2. I never do international sales -- I don't do them because of the risks.  I have been a recreational seller for almost 20 years, and sell only my personal items, so I know how well they're treated.  I am fiercely loyal to Ebay, and refuse to be one of the haters I see on a few posts.  I have a feeling I'm going to have to "eat" this claim, but a part of me really wants to dig in and fight it ... it just isn't right!!  Has this happened to anyone else??

Luckily I was eyes wide open a few years ago when I saw that the countries I don't ship to list was not automatically repopulated when I relisted items. So for about a year I manually had to redo the list every time until I had written several e-mails asking why this couldn't be left alone. They actually either listened or made the fix and for the past recent years I have always looked to be sure but have not needed to redo the list.
Go ahead and "dig in'. You will be converted over to the dark side soon enough. I do hope ebay stands behind you as a seller rather than take the buyer's word.

Do you still feel fiercely loyal after having been forced into the global shipping program against your will and it called a "glitch" that your selling settings were changed without your consent?

I have paypal set up so that ebay cannot do this. The payments won't go through.

But...today's glitch is tomorrow's policy. Hmm, With managed payments we will then be forced to use the GSP?

Unless something has changed, managed payments doesn't support GSP.  I'm sure it will at some point, though.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

It definitely will...I don't know if I'm future tripping or I am right...

Ebay software is now checking the Global Shipping Program box for me EVERY TIME I LIST. I have to make sure I uncheck that box. I never signed up for it ever and have avoided it like the plague. Yet the box is now checked every single time I list something-even after unchecking it and then hitting create similar, where all the settings should stay the same. I even tried making a template from a listing I had just made that I'd unchecked the box for. When I went to use the template the box was checked-again.

I'm a bit confused here...

Are we getting GTC and GSP mixed up?

But the part that kills me is...

I really liked the GSP but when I joined managed payments I lost that ability.

I am guessing then if you joined managed payments you would not have to deal with the GSP.

That being said...

GTC listings have nothing to do with it one way or the other...

You might want to go into your Site preferences, chances are that's where your "default" shipping settings lie.

This is incorrect.  MP doesn't even support GSP at this point.

If a seller doesn't want to ship internationally, Ebay can not force a seller to do so.  If listings are set up to ship to the US only, GSP won't even apply.

But it should be noted that there are many sellers that like using GSP.  I don't choose to use it, but for some they prefer it.

It's not incorrect, but it is speculation. We don't know yet. Ebay makes policy changes in stages. At this point ebay doesn't force sellers to use GSP. That doesn't mean it won't happen in the future. Ebay is notorious for making changes that resemble slowly boiling a frog in a pot. Ebay does have long term planning changes that we are not privy to. I may be future tripping, or I may be right on the money, and follow the money I do. ebay would make some sweet bucks by forcing everyone into GSP at some point, and if their lawyers say it checks out, then in the future it's a very good possibility.

Did you ask the buyer to send you photos? Maybe there is a chance that they have you confused with another seller. I am afraid that you will lose since ebay believes buyers 99.99 of the time. Ask for photos. Maybe the buyer is fishing for a partial refund. Goodluck.

What?  So you are saying Ebay can FORCE me to ship internationally even if I don't want to???  No they can't and that is not speculation, that is fact.

So you are saying that Ebay may FORCE sellers to ship internationally, what about sellers that sell products that can't ship to certain countries?  How will Ebay handle that?  Force the seller to ship something that is illegal to ship to that country?

"Force" or "uncheck the box for them"... same waste, different toilet. Sorry, but one simply CANNOT with any certainty whatsoever say that ANYTHING "cannot" or "will not" happen on eBay. You've been around long enough to know this.

eBay isn't even bothering to announce policy changes any more. They just do it. Must be part of the "enhanced seller protection" they've been nattering about since New Year's Day.

Chaos is NOT an "industry standard".

I think this is a bit silly myself.  But just my opinion.  I've been on Ebay a long time and I've NEVER had them FORCE me into an illegal act.  EVER.  Not even close.

I get it that many are upset with Ebay for many reasons.  So they are willing to believe most anything about them.

Ebay has NEVER announced all changes.  So far this year we have has THREE Seller Updates.  And more is coming.  In between they are making changes that we typically don't know about until we stumble across them.  But none of them are major changes.  Annoying sometimes, but not major changes.

FYI, Seller Protection was covered in the Spring Seller Update.  Are you saying that something else has changed in this arena since the Spring Update?  What was it?  I missed it!

I highly doubt that ebay can force anybody to ship GSP, or internationally.  BUT, they can make it a shipping choice and if someone buys something and they are an International buyer, you may well get a ding IF you don't ship it.
