Is there a way to look up past auction closing bids for a specific item . I do not want to pay for a service like Worthpoint. I can not find any examples on the web except this service shows one.

You've looked in Advance Search, then Sold listings?

Search the item you want to know the ending price of. Go to sold listings on the left side of the page. Change the search at the top to auctions, then search high to low, or low to high.

I don't know if you need a store to get access to it. But maybe check out Terapeak.

You can try checking the "sold" items once you enter the search terms in the search box.  Select "sold" on the left side of the screen under "Show Only." The results there are for the past 90 days.  If you subscribe to the Sellers Hub, you can get results for the past 365 days by selecting "Research" and entering your search terms.

Past auctions

As stated above, eBay search results display 90 days and Terapeak displays 12 months.

Your prospective buyers will have no idea what the starting price was for past sellers.
Your prospective buyers will have no idea what the actual price paid was either.

Do a bluff and start the item at a high price. Manually do markdowns, run a sale, etc. until the price decays to a level that makes the item sell.
