Outrageous Fees

Why doesn't Ebay show you, prior to submitting your listing, what their fees are?

Why do they hide their commission fees until the item sells?

I believed that the listing fee was the fee and nowhere does it clearly state what their commission will be until after the item sells.

NEVER AGAIN will I sell anything on Ebay.

Craigslist, here I come.

Re: Outrageous Fees

Ok, but did you take time to read about selling and fees BEFORE you sold something? Nothing is hidden, you can do the math and get a good idea what the cost would have been before you listed.

Re: Outrageous Fees

Oh, my... eBay fully discloses the Final Value Fees. I hate it for you that you didn't read the TOS. Upward and onward and all...

Edit to add: Have you read about the Hold that is placed on new sellers? >> Payments on hold | eBay << Tick on that, too.

Re: Outrageous Fees

There are also about a million calculators, both on & off Ebay that you can use to estimate the costs, prior to selling.

Re: Outrageous Fees

Why should I have to go digging to find what Ebay selling fees are?  They should be disclosed on the listing page prior to publishing - just like their listing fee's are. A red note stating 'Your total fees are X listing fees and Y commission fees, once your item sells' - how difficult is that??

Perhaps you didn't notice all of these helpful links just above the button that you click to launch your listing. Didn't you at least wonder what the fees might be?

Re: Outrageous Fees

After 10 years here as a buyer, were you really not aware that the seller pays final value fees?

Re: Outrageous Fees

Because until the item sales, eBay does not know the sales tax that will be charged the buyer or in many cases the shipping cost, so there would be no way to tell you in advance what the FVFs would be.

Until they know how much it sells for, the shipping charge and sales tax, they don't know how much the fee's are going to be.

Have a great day.

@walkdingo

If for no other reason... so you won't be as upset when eBay comes digging into your pocket to collect.

Re: Outrageous Fees

I went into a restaurant the other night and  ordered a meal.

The prices were all clearly on the menu.

When the waiter took my order why didn't he warn me how much it was going to be?

I was shocked at the end of the meal when they gave me the bill.

Re: Outrageous Fees

eBay really needs to have a checklist of things you need to read (or say you read) before selling here. Being ignorant of the percentage is one thing. But not thinking you'd pay fees at all is next level.

Good luck on Craigslist. It is fee free for most. But the no fees has the cost of a lot fewer eyes that will see the listings.

Re: Outrageous Fees

The biggest reason is eBay has no idea what your FVF's will be until the item sells. There are variable factors: shipping and sales tax which eBay applies the FVF to when the sale is complete. For most sales the FVF is 12.9% applied to the (item price + shipping + sales tax) + .30.

Some sellers will twist the figures and claim the % is higher but it is 12.9%, generally.
