Out-dated Feedback System

I've been selling on ebay for quite awhile and dodged a few negs and some neutrals in that time. when i first started selling, you could leave both, negs and neuts on bad buyers (i've never left less than positive for anyone). that changed soon after to what we have now. I strongly feel ebay's feedback system is out-dated and unfair to honest sellers. we are at the mercy of some vengeful  buyers. #1) With big market sellers like walmart, overstock, wayfair etc. using third-party sellers, the only way to rate purchases is through reviews. #2) also, if you are one of eBay's most reputable sellers that consistently delivers outstanding customer service, there should be no option for negative or neutral feedback.

either way, that is my opinion on where ebay's feedback should be presently.

So once a seller establishes that reputation, he can then start screwing buyers left and right without fear of anyone finding out?

Yeah, every day I'm glad I'm not a seller.

"...2) also, if you are one of eBay's most reputable sellers that consistently delivers outstanding customer service, there should be no option for negative or neutral feedback."

Being a top-rated seller is not a guarantee for buyers that every seller will manage perfect performance on every transaction.

And actually, the feedback system's purpose has changed pretty drastically from eBay's early years. Then it was a necessary report of a trading partner's honesty and reliability in the community of buyers and sellers. Then there were fewer safeguards for buyers than there are now. These days feedback is not as important, and fewer people are leaving it and consulting it. It still has some meaning, mainly for buyers to vet their sellers, but it is waning.

Now there are strong buyer protections as well as specific seller metrics to keep the eBay population safe, and feedback is no longer factored in to those metrics. It is too subjective and arbitrary, and therefore not always a reliable measure. So it would not be useful for sellers to use feedback to report bad buyer behavior, for the same reasons eBay no longer uses it to judge seller performance. There was too much abuse of the process, with some trading partners leaving unfair dueling negatives and retaliatory comments, subverting the feedback 's purpose.

Instead, it is now far more useful to give non-paying buyers a strike on their account as opposed to leaving some comment in feedback few will see. The no-payment strike helps all sellers savvy enough to set their Buyer Requirements, compared to a follow-up comment in feedback that most sellers would not see til after the fact (as most buyers are anonymous until the transaction takes place). So there would be no opportunity to read a buyer's feedback prior to the sale, even if eBay allowed sellers to leave negatives for buyers.

So, because you established a good reputation at the start that means you can NEVER make a mistake?

I've been here since '01, I'm a small dealer and have had this whole discussion many times with other sellers. I've also been a TRS since that started. My OP was meant to find out how to go about getting support to get through to ebay that the FB system is out-dated, because it is!! I bring it up every time I have the pleasure of speaking to them (every month or so). Who knows if other sellers bring it to their attention? That's my point, that's it!

Actually, since 2008 the feedback system has been nothing more than the opinion of the buyer with such opinions being very subjective.  The best use of the feedback system by sellers is to use it to check on a bidder's or offer maker's retraction record and history of their feedback left for sellers.

we've made mistakes, everyone does. It doesn't deserve negative fb if you fix your mistake. Ebay needs to protect their good, honest sellers.

I agree! That's the point of this post. My reputation shouldn't be based on a buyers very subjective opinion or current mood.

First of all, any established seller who gets a couple of negatives will not lose any sales. There’s no need to lose sleep over getting a negative.

As someone who has spent over 30 years in customer service or sales I learned long ago you cannot and will not please everyone. There are plenty of unreasonable people in this world.

In my personal buying experience, I've had more issues with established, long-time, and oftentimes TRS sellers.

I will have to take issue with your statement.  Feedback was broken when all a shady seller had to do was leave a neg for a buyer and thus prevent a buyer from leaving a neg in fear of retaliation. Not that it really ever mattered that much.

All sellers will eventually run into a buyer from Hades. A seller that has excellent feedback is not going to be harmed by a neg.

What eBay did to help with this was to make a neg for a seller less traumatic was to have it drop off after a year.

Agreed. When I'm deciding whether to make a purchase on eBay, I check a seller's feedback--both received and left for others. I can certainly tell when some rogue buyer has left a bizarre, nonsensical rant for an otherwise exceptional seller. Those unhinged negative comments, or criticisms of factors out of the seller's control, are pretty easy to overlook.

I wouldn't buy on eBay if they did away with seller feedback.
