Opening a new account without a ss number

My next door neighbor was hanging in my garage the other day, watching me wrap and pack ... he asked me a question about eBay policies and I honestly didn't know.  So I came here because I just bet there's somebody here (probly more than one) that knows the answer.

He is a foreign national (French, but a good guy anyway).   Here legally.   He does not have a SS number and, for some reason, doesn't want one.  Wants to sell on eBay on an individual.  He has a few things that may have some value.

I don't think that eBay will allow him to open an individual account with an EIN.
I contacted chat assist and they said he'd need to do the W8 route.

So, how does THAT work.  The W8 application gives you a temp ss number?  Do I file that with eBay, or IRS? or both?

When you, in your original post, said, "Do I file with eBay? The IRS? Or both?

that kind of sounded like you planned to make it your problem by asking if YOU could file.

Yea, typo.  A shot of bourbon, and a pull offa pipe with some Blue Dream in it will do that ...

I didn't say or imply it was unusual.  I'm not new to the threads.  However some posters have posted on threads sounding like they are the OP but aren't.  So I like to verify.  It is fine that this isn't something you would do.

If anyone is interested, here is what a W8 looks like.

Re: Opening a new account without a ss number

Boy, you guys dissect EVERYTHING dontcha?

LoL

I have more than one account.  I don't pay attention to which one I'm leaving when I decide to come here.  Should I?   Would it help the unicorns among you to maybe stampede less?   Do unicorns have panties that get all twisted?

I don't have anything to hide, like many here who have "buyers accounts" and "sellers accounts" and all that I just don't care.  Maybe I should be more paranoid.

sounds like you meant in spite of being French, hes a nice guy anyway.

That is EXACTLY what I meant.  Can you lighten up a little?  Oh, I see that you might be French.  bonjourami   that explains that.   And Hallo, Wie geht es dir?

luckythewinner noted that "Also in the last line the OP said "I" and not "HE" ..."

Yea, what about that?  Very suspicious.   LoL.   OR, could it be the proper mix of an oz of 15 yr old bonded whisky, and a bowl of Blue Dream?

If THAT'S the worst 'posting fopaux' that I might have made THAT night I'll be happy.   I probably did a couple of tense shifts too, oh, and a comma splice.  Hate that.  Suspicious.

AND, yes, he is using his daughters numbers to open an account.   ! GASP !  Isn't that just AWFUL ? Governments all over the world put restrictions on the surfs, gives them an illusion of control.  But we always figure out work arounds.  To those of you who feel a moral compass towards the IRS, sleep well knowing that he's not looking to do anyone any harm, he wants to make a buck or two and get rid of some stuff.  He'll pay the taxes, thru his daughter ... he's not going to hang his daughter out to dry.

I wonder, however, how many of the naysayers here are nay-saying because they fear the competition?  Will he be selling stuff that will compete with you?

Pretty unlikely since we have no idea what your friend plans to sell.

Uh...  I'm the one who said this happens inadvertently, is not uncommon, is no big deal, so I'm not sure why you aimed this barb at me.

Anyhow, all's well that ends well, and your friend got the advice he needed from someone qualified to give it.

Speaking of lightening up.

I responded to this, your exact words:  "They aren't the OP unless they are posting with another ID on their own thread?!?!"   That punctuation surely implied that something was unusual or even nefarious.

But he'll be paying the taxes at his daughter's tax rate, not at his own. Those may be higher, or may be lower, or may be zero.

To those of you who feel a moral compass towards the IRS

I don't have a "moral compass towards" the IRS. But since I am forced to pay taxes I want others to do the same.

Clearly to you it did but that doesn't mean it was how it was intended.

I've been on many threads where another poster comes in and posts as if they were the OP but as it turns out they were not.  I just didn't assume like you did that on this thread they were one and the same, I asked them directly.

I'm unsure why this simple thing has been so upsetting.  But I apologize for causing you concern.
