Open a claim for a damaged item

Hi,

I sold an item to a buyer and they have messaged to say it’s damaged, I have asked them to initiate a return for a full refund picking item is damaged as the reason so I pay for the return postage. The buyer said they can’t do this due to technical issues uploading pictures to the return. I’ve asked him to contact eBay to help with the system issues. Anyway if he were to open a case for item damaged would I have to just refund him or would I be able to get the item back?

There is no requirement to upload photos for a return.  You have asked them to initiate a return through Ebay and it is their responsibility to do just that.  You will then be asked to issue a return shipping label and the buyer will then have to ship the item back.  At that point you refund.  I believe that you can also send a QR code, or something like that, so that they can print the return label at the post office.  There are no technical issues that prevent a return.

There are aspects of the return process that does require a photo to continue with the return.
If no photo is uploaded the button to continue the return process will be greyed out.

Thank-you that was my understanding but the buyer is basically sending irate messages saying he can’t. So if he doesn’t do a return and he opens a dispute case instead, what are my options on the case?

As long as you respond to the case with a label, and refund after return, he has to return the item to be refunded.

I just did a return and the return process required an image be attached to the return request. I could not proceed without attaching the image.

Buyer may be phishing for an offer of a partial refund. Politely respond to them and let them know that the return request needs to come through the eBay return process. If they are having trouble loading the image into the request they should contact eBay customer support.

If the buyer resorts to opening a NAD chargeback with their CC company then it's a different ball game. You can return to the forum if that happens.

The return postage or a partial refund....would they be about the same?

Looking at what you charge for shipping I think doing a partial refund would be less headache for seller and buyer...and seller might not lose as much in the sale. Just a thought.

Thanks all, he hasn’t asked for a partial refund he wants a full one. I said to him to contact customer services and that’s when he started sending block caps so I’ve gone back with a polite message reiterating the same. I just wanted to make sure he still has to return it even if he opens a dispute. Thanks everyone (he’s just literally opened a return haha, after all of that).

Might want follow up with a, "Please make sure it is packaged as received to you.  Unfortunately I have to open all returned items at the my local post office due to people who do not send back what was sent to them.  That way if I need to the clerk can file with the US Postal Service Federal Inspectors Service comparing my photo's and eBay invoice to what was returned allowing me a Governmental witness."

Up to you.  Likely get a negative FB but likely get that anyways.

I just checked on a recent purchase of mine and if you write into the add details box it allows for the return process to continue without uploading photos.

I believe ebay return policy is that its supposed to be returned in the original packaging.  So if its not, thats an issue the seller can use in their case.

I heard that a buyer can upload ANY image to the return, even a image that has nothing to do with the item, like a picture of your grandma.   Crazy!
