October 2022 Sales Goals and Plans

So the holiday season has begun.  What are your plans for the month and/or the season (thru Jan 15, 2023 per most carrier surcharge programs)?  Is this a good season for you, are your products for a different season, or is you inventory season-agnostic?

What Say Ye All?

Re: October 2022 Sales Goals and Plans

October has had an interesting start.  Last month, I used my 250 free listings (non-Store seller) to post 250 Fixed Price listings, rather than the 5-day Auctions I used to post.  Low and behold, I'm suddenly making sales again!  Not blockbusters, but I've already had more sales in October (7 days) than for the entire month of September (30 days).  This was an unexpected result - previous attempts at Fixed Price listings led to a nearly complete drop-off of sales.

Plans for October include continued listing of PC parts on eBay and refurbished PCs, All-in-Ones, iMac and MacBook devices, and laptops and tablets.  There's a lot to list, and I need to get into the habit of posting at least one or two each evening, rather than trying to get it all done on the weekends (when I'm more likely to be found either emptying the house for sale or 'checking my eyelids for holes' in the recliner (regardless of what's on the TV).

The weekends now are filled with moving - boxes, furniture, clothing & dishware -- it's amazing the amount of stuff you collect over 40yrs time!  But we've decided to sell the big house, enjoy apartment living for another year or two, and then build new somewhere not too far from Memphis, but far enough that we aren't requested to babysit the grands every weekend.  🙂  I'm just worried I won't be able to fit that last 800sq ft of 'stuff' into the 150sq ft of storage space we have left!

Oh yeah, and before I forget, I may be taking up another programming contract!  I just have to be really sure about this company -- I doubt my current boss will accept me back a second time.  On the other hand, it pays 3-4x what I'm making now, so I should finally be able to start saving AND paying down my credit cards... and picking up more of the current expenses for the two of us.

Great weekend in Memphis -- 72 for the high Saturday, 75/76 on Sunday.  Next week gets into the low-to-mid 80's, but I work indoors so that's not as much of a problem as higher temps on the weekends.  🙂

Re: October 2022 Sales Goals and Plans

With zero sales so far this weekend, any goal whatsoever seems unrealistic.  And yes, we list every.single.day.

Sales stunk this week! I too list 100's of items a week and sales are stagnant.

Totally unacceptable.

Thumbs down.

Re: October 2022 Sales Goals and Plans

Less than two sales per day, and all but one sale were basically "loss leaders",  suggesting that buyers are being VERY tight-fisted with their money due to the economy and Putin's saber-rattling.

Not a healthy signal for this financial quarter.  And I list multiple items nearly every day.

But I'll keep on truckin'.

@gotta-have-it-collectables @rosachs

I didn't list new items in last 4 months, i had a few listings on that period (about 18 listings), my listings impressions was dropping gradually, but i listed 5 new listings 5 days ago, and my impressions increased %200 and i sold 3 items, also my old listings impressions have increased, even i sold an expensive listing had low impressions lately.

You need to spend more efforts in your store and you will get good results, like a wise farmer once day told me "The more effort you put into taking care of your farm, the higher yield you will receive."

I thought like other sellers that ebay facing serious problems on last 5 months, it's not true, Yes ebay changed many things on the platform which caused many problems for many sellers lately.

you need to adjusting with the new changes by refreshing your listings keywords, updating description & specifics, Do some researches on ebay (i suggest Terapeak tool), also determining your inactive listings then refreshing them (Download your active listing report, it will help you to determining your inactive listings).

I hope all the best to you all.

Rami.

Re: October 2022 Sales Goals and Plans

Interesting suggestions and thanks for the link to the quality reports. Overall, after a short glance, we seem to be doing pretty well with their recommendations.

I guess one of my gripes is that eBay seems to expect us to update 2500 listings a few times a year. If we spent the time doing this we'd be making less than minimum wage for all our work. If then, what's the point?

I've seen this at work (Online Sales Manager for local firm), with sales slowly sinking over the past few months.  And it doesn't help when USPS fails to properly handle our shipments, leaving some lost or very late.

My personal sales seem to do better as Fixed Price than Auction, so I'm looking to expand that a bit.  Altho - I have some harder-to-find (not rare, just not commonly used) PC components that should do really well at auction, based on what I'm seeing in the Solds search,

Ar your listings mostly Fixed Price?  The longer a listing stays unsold, the more it sinks in Search, unless you pay eBay even more money to increase exposure.  And with some Promoted Listing suggested rates exceeding 10%, you're looking a nearly doubling eBay's cut of your sale.

To fix stale listings, end and repost as new.  I do this as much as possible at work and have been using auctions with my personal items (hard to get 'stale' when a listing only lasts 5 days) - it does seem to help as I've noticed the 20-25% of the listings I end/repost-as-new start selling again.

SixBit, my 3rd party eBay/ecommerce management tool, can do this for me automatically:  I set the listings to post at a given date/time as Fixed Price 90 days.  At the 90 day mark (or slightly before to avoid cancelling a listing just seconds old), SB will cancel the listing and if my Allocation Plan indicates, it will relist or reprice & relist.  Allocation Plans can also manage multi-venue, single product inventory, but I'm not big on that, especially for rare items where buyers may be looking on several sites and purchase my listing for a single unit several times, once each on several platforms.  Not Fun.

There have been a number of discussion here about refreshing listing or increasing exposure or improving sales -- check out the Board Search feature to see if any of them interest you.

Re: October 2022 Sales Goals and Plans

Sales have increased for me slightly, so far this month, 5, with a possible additional sale (best offer).  I have found the last few months people are making more best offers than they used too and sales have been pretty much non-existent.  For me-I have not been working on my store or my listings or adding much new.  I agree, you need to work, to reap rewards.

Bob-like you I am amazed at what a person can amass over the years.  I saw that with my parents and I am still going through their stuff and it has been 2 years.  Right now I am working on going through the last 2 totes from an auction so I can have empty totes for another auction I am bidding on.  I am hoping to get some serious wins.

We just got back a couple of weeks ago from a trip to Shipshewana Indiana.  It was a great trip.  We rented a cottage on a small lake for a week.  We did some fishing, shopping and lots of eating Amish cooking.  Our granddaughter went with us.  We had pretty good weather except it was cold the last 2 days.  We plan to go back next year.

Bob-sounds like you are making steady progress on emptying your house.  Sure hope you get the new job, just keep us posted.

Let us hope for a good selling season this year.  Happy selling!

Re: October 2022 Sales Goals and Plans

The last week of September, I went through my listings (6500+) and shed about $11k in price, promoted the hell out of everything (their suggested rates +++), ran a coupon, and added in volume pricing.  Keep in mind I also list a minimum of 20-25 items a day.

Sales are down 24.5% from the previous 31 days and this week I'm down 53.7%.  I'd love to be able to blame it solely on inflation or even something geopolitical but truth is there's probably not just one thing causing it.  My plan is to keep on listing as I have purchased inventory to sell way in advance and the only thing I'm sure of is that it will certainly go unsold if I don't list it.

An old sales manager (during the Great Recession no less) told me the only thing we can do anything about was our attitude and our activity.  I'm making a choice to see this as an opportunity to work my way out of this situation and I hope you all do too if you're having a tough go at it.

Re: October 2022 Sales Goals and Plans

Bob, fingers crossed on the new job opportunity!

Debbie, that sounds like a nice, relaxing week.

Clay, glad you found the thread.

As far as it being 4th quarter, sales are not great, and to be moving during Q4 makes it even worse. At a time I should be listing the most, I'll be listing the least.  It's going to be an interesting next couple of months.  I honestly don't think slow sales are a result of the economy. Go into any store and people are shopping, and not just for needs. I think ebay is losing buyers and sellers to other venues, and those of us not paying out the rear to promote and just getting demoted rapidly. I can list on the other three selling platforms I list on  in a fraction of the time,  and they don't charge FVFs on shipping or have a bazillion recommended item specifics  and new listing "tool" that is a pain. I think more people will be buying and shopping these other newer venues, so some of us will have to work harder to get those sales.

9 years ago I quit teaching and said I would need to have 10 sales/day on average to pay the bills and such. I am STILL not averaging 10 sales a day.  I think I averaged 150/sales a month when I was teaching and listing just part time. It's sad I haven't been able to increase sales yet to that, but I will keep plugging along, AFTER we tackle this move!
