OKAY, just got Ebay's determination, which was affirmed by the concierge. I Lose All, Lamp/Money/$20

OKAY, just got Ebay's determination, which was affirmed by the concierge. I lose both, the lamp and the money plus a $20.00 "dispute" fee that Ebay tacks on to the losing side involved in a dispute. Let me refresh the memory of those that have forgotten. Over 3 months ago I sold a Streamlight headlamp to a California resident for $168.00 + shipping. Buyer gets the lamp and gives a + feedback and gushes over the lamp. Headlamp was sold in as is condition with no return allowed. 60 days after receipt, I get a notice from ebay that the buyer had disputed the transaction with his bank for "item not as described". Ebay took the monies from my account and "held" it until a determination was made by the buyer's bank. I then wrote and talked to the buyer to state that even though item was sold as is, and buyer was 30 days past ebay's warranty under buyer protection, I was willing to take the item back and pay the freight. He said that it was too much trouble, that I had sold it, he had bought it and as such he was entitled to send it to get repaired at Streamlight (which has a lifetime warranty). I explained that I owned the light, he said that it was too much trouble and he kept it. I objected to the dispute.

Today I got the email from ebay that said I lose both the money, the lamp and a $20.00 dispute fee. I called my concierge about the Seller protection and he said that since it had been done through the sellers bank, that ebay's hands were tied. That he would credit me the $20.00 fee as a courtesy for being a 100% ebay trader for 3600 + feed-backs over a span of over 24 years. I asked for his superior and he said that he was it... Judge-Jury-Executioner. I will be canceling my sales for now, as I cannot afford to risk anymore sales to thieves. Additionally I am seriously considering ending my ebay relationship. Not for what this buyer did, but for what ebay failed to do. Seller Protection by ebay? When? Where? How? The thieving buyer is still dealing on ebay.

eBay should have protected you and asked the bank to require the item be shipped back to you, but since it's not their money, they didn't act. Sorry to hear that.

Did you show knives in the photos? Sorry, I see you said there were no knives in the main photo. But the other photos showed knives? Looks like you had that problem a couple of times.

If you're considering quitting eBay because of something that is not only 100% completely out of your control but also 100% completely out of eBay's control then you may as well stop reselling in general because stuff like this WILL happen eventually on a long enough timeline.

It is with great sadness that I make this one of my last postings on ebay. Never thought it would come like this. I guess I expected a bigger sendoff. My bad. This topic has given me 20-20 vision about ebay's relationship with members. It has removed my rose colored glasses and made them stark and sharp. I already removed all items I had for sale. I will wait until I receive the items I bought and are on the way. After they arrive and are inspected as being OK, I most probably will end my relationship with ebay. In good conscience  I cannot continue as is.Thank you ebay for the many good years I have had with you. So sad they had to come to an end like this.

Odd.  For a small seller you had decent sales, including some high value sales.  Hard to imagine why you would give up over a single incident.

I will not be selling for now. I will still buy from certain sellers, only the future will tell.

They do call themselves Concierge, how else would I even know the term... also, I have yet to speak to someone with a foreign accent... surprisingly enough! I have spoken with people with hispanic accent, southern accent, Bostonian accent... New York, etc... but to date, no Philipino, Indian or Pakistani accent-as I have with Amazon. All have been knowledgeable and courteous. Sometimes you do not get the answer I want, but that is to be expected.

I tried, but to no avail. Ebay has all messages between me and the buyer where I asked him to return the light to get the money refunded. He simply refused! Said that he now had it, that he was going to get it fixed. Not pay for it, Not send it back.

It wasn't the buyer's fault. It was because of ebay's reaction or failure to react. What if this had happened when I sold my $2000.00 PRS 24 fret 10 top guitar. Or my $800 night vision rifle scope... That is what scares the beejeezus out of me! If I was selling $13.00 eye drops, then OK, I will chance it. But I am not a reseller. I sell stuff I have in my house or shop that I either not use or cannot use because of age or physical issues (no longer play in a rock band... no longer go in the woods to hunt). Both those buyers became friends and I think my toys went to good people for a very good price!

...vintagecraze50...unfortunately I don't trust out congressmen and women anymore...those peoples only work to line up their pocket with $$$, millions of $$$, not for the American peoples...it's a joke about them...!!!

...and I stayed firm on my reply as I would rather seeing eBay releases the CC company information to sellers so they can fight against these disputes...

As it stands right now ebay is an accomplice to theft in many of these cases.  Their policies enable it and encourage it. rugerskick said it best. Ebay is aiding and abetting the crime of larceny by being a knowing facilitator. I wonder if the CEO and the CFO of Ebay have any idea that this is going on. Taking care of us, the sellers, even a little bit, would not hurt business, in fact, it should boost business. I for one, with the pricier/bulkier items, was only offering them for local pickup for cash. I would then allow ebay to get their fees from my credit cards on file. This may be the only way I will sell anything anymore.

@mool. It is the same on other selling venues. I get credit card chargebacks from Amazon as well.  Welcome to online selling in the 21st century.

Credit card chargebacks are NOT eBay specific.

I wouldn't say that it's completely out of eBay's control, but it does not help anything when the seller cannot even get the contact info for whichever card provider is attempting the chargeback.

I don't understand why eBay cannot release at least that much information to the seller, and let him go off to fight his own war if he feels the potential loss will be worth the effort to defend.

Again, nothing to do with eBay. They are not going to cover your credit card chargebacks, neither is Amazon, Etsy or any of the others.

Never list anything for sale online, thru a venue that has a payment processor for the transaction, that you cannot afford to lose.

Your other option could be sell local with a face to face, cash transaction. Auction house,  pawn shop.  Plenty of options for those high value items.
