Not Authenticated versus Counterfeit. eBay keeps removing my listing and I don’t know why.

I sell sports memorabilia. I sold a Mickey Mantle autographed baseball the other week that doesn’t have a COA. I made sure to note in the listing that it wasn’t authenticated. I received an offer and made a deal with a buyer, THEN eBay cancelled the listing. Not only do I have a case opened by the buyer which eBay keeps telling me to resolve, but I also have emails from eBay customer support telling me that I acknowledged it’s “not authentic and selling counterfeit goods is not allowed on the site”. Not authentic and not authenticated are two entirely different things. I see not authenticated memorabilia sold on here all the time. Did a policy change since the new year, because here is the kicker, I bought the ball on eBay myself!! What the heck guys??

Other than the choice in the Item Specifics, did your title, description or custom items specifics say anything about authentic, coa or similar....even to say it doesn't have it?

Technically, the policy on autographs says that you have to know it's authentic to sell it. That doesn't mean it needs a COA, just that you know it's real. This isn't an area I know anything about, just trying to interpret the policy.

I know they havea list of cards, that are frequently forged, that require a coa to be sold. I learned that when I tried to sell a Wayne Gretzky rookie card. With the proliferation of fake signed baseballs and other autographs, maybe they're taking a similar stance. Either way, with the take downs, I think it would be best to have it authenticated before trying to sell it here.

If you go that route, know that the policy lists authenticators who are approved and others who eBay will not accept.

IMO you are walking a thin line.  What it boils down to is e bay removed the listing so DO NOT relist it on ebay.  Doing so may get you a nice lifetime suspension.

When you say it is not Authenticated you are saying you have no idea if it is real or not IMO.  Now I admit this is a very narrow view point which is what e bay is .....narrow minded.  List it on craigslist or facebook marketplace and be done with it.

This quest stands on the edge of a blade...stray but a little and you shall fail to the ruin of us all.

Re: Not Authenticated versus Counterfeit. eBay keeps removing my listing and I don’t know why.

You are parsing words here, but it is very simple: If you can't verify an item is authentic, it can't be listed on eBay. It is also against policy to put disclaimers in a listing saying that the item might not be genuine. (See last link below for the policy.)

One cannot sell an item on eBay on the chance it might be genuine. It is either authentic or not. You may see others skirting the issue, but they haven't been caught. Yet.

Below is the autographed items policy for your perusal. How you listed the item and in what category also has bearing on the matter. Below that is the link to the counterfeit item policy. That’s the relevant policy to your situation here.

One thing is certain—do not relist it. Multiple takedowns can get you suspended or restricted altogether. When that happens there is no appeal or recourse.

Re: Not Authenticated versus Counterfeit. eBay keeps removing my listing and I don’t know why.

I think what you're up against is akin the keyword spamming. Always say what the item is and never what it is not. Listing is as Non Authenticated will cause the listing to also appear in searches for items that Are Authenticated.

While I understand the language and what Non means, it's not a good practice when listing. eBay and search engines will only look at individual words and not in context with the rest of what's written.

Your attempt to clearly show that this item has not been authenticated is admirable. Sadly, it's indistinguishable from listings that use those terms to mislead.

This item is not Pure 100% Sterling Silver...

This purse is a cheap Korean  copy of a Chinese knockoff of an Authentic Gucci bag...

This baseball is a Not Authenticated Mickey Mantle Autograph...

Once you see it in that light, the problem is apparent.

Re: Not Authenticated versus Counterfeit. eBay keeps removing my listing and I don’t know why.

I figured that was the case the first time I tried listing it. So the second time, I just chose the Not Authenticated option that eBay provides to the seller to choose! How can this be an option to choose from and yet they still cancel the listing claiming it’s counterfeit?

I get that but I just find it odd that eBay provides me as the seller an option to choose Not Authenticated in the listing template. You see it all the time, it’s really not uncommon at all. I bought this ball a month or two ago here on eBay and it was listed as not authenticated. Why should it be any different this time when I try to sell it?

Re: Not Authenticated versus Counterfeit. eBay keeps removing my listing and I don’t know why.

I posted an autographed baseball on ebay. I have the COA and posted that as well. Ebay deemed the ball counterfeit and removed the listing. Here's the kicker. I bought the ball from them over 20 years ago and of course they have no records beyond 3 years. IMO do not buy this type of memorabilia from Ebay.
