Newly listed item shows up on search with wrong listing date

On Saturday Oct 1,  I listed several items.  Two of the more expensive ones had never been listed before.  On Sunday I noticed there were no views on several of the items.   The two new items were listed in the pottery and glass category, they are both Vernon Kilns Hawaii items.  I have a saved search category for Vernon Kilns, newly listed.  When I did a search for my items they should have showed up in the first couple of pages, when I finally found them they were on page 15 and showed a listing date of June 26!  How is a buyer supposed to find the newly listed items when they show this far down the search list?  Any ideas?

Re: Newly listed item shows up on search with wrong listing date

The new items listed for the first time were showing under the correct dates?

For the other items, recently ebay changed search so that 'relisted' items would show under their original listing date rather than as newly listed.  If an item has been relisted, they don't consider as 'new'.  It's odd though as when I look at just your VK listings, it shows the San Merino teapot as having been listed on Oct. 1 but when I did a newly listed search for Vernon Kiln, it shows as having been listed on June 26.

Re: Newly listed item shows up on search with wrong listing date

Thanks for confirming that I am not crazy!   I had a similar item that I listed on Sunday and it showed up near the top of the list even though it had been listed a couple of times.

The main issue for me is that I assume that a lot of buyers (including me) use the "newly listed" filter when searching.  I would not have gone down the list 15 pages expecting newly listed items and would not have found these two listings.

I did call eBay and of course only received the usual "lip service" when I tried to voice my concerns.

I considered ending the listings and starting them again as new hoping they would go to the top of the list but one of the items does have a few watchers so I will let them run.

Re: Newly listed item shows up on search with wrong listing date

When you list you have to start over if you want the date to be the date you make the listing.  Ebay stopped the scam of allowing sellers to relist to get their items shown as newly listed when in fact they have been on Ebay for months. Buyers expect to see NEW items not relisted items.

Re: Newly listed item shows up on search with wrong listing date

True, but the problem with that is that I have had items in the relatively recent past(3 months) that have sold, and then a month later I find another one laying around the hoard I have here and relist the original listing as a template because the shipping and everything has been figured out already (I will take new pictures if there is slight difference).  So even though the item really is NEW, it does not show up as newly listed.  To me that is not fair.

In that situation when you find another one, use sell similar instead of relist @kringletrain.

Not the two I mentioned, the San Marino Lei Lani teapot and the Hawaiian Flowers fluted bowl, these were both 15 pages down the search and showing listing date of June 26.  These two items had never been listed before.

Re: Newly listed item shows up on search with wrong listing date

The teapot is the only one listed and thus gets top spot (and I suppose bottom too) using a longer string of keywords.

When I search Vernon Kilns teapot, it is #3 when using Best Match,  #21 for Newly Listed, and #55 for Lowest Price + Shipping.

Three different Searches. Three different positions.

BTW, anecdote is not data, but I've found that when I repeat a Search, the items will change from one search to the next. It makes me think that some AI somewhere is dropping items that have been seen but not purchased/opened/Watched as being of no interest and showing me others I haven't seen yet. (There are 4500 Vernon Kilns items listed.)

It may also make a difference if you use a different ID to Search, since if you were shopping, and eBay is supposed to be set up for shoppers, your own item would be of less interest to you than those listed by Big Betty's Bargain Barn.

Re: Newly listed item shows up on search with wrong listing date

A relisted item maintains the same item number and therefore defaults to when it was first listed.

As someone already mentioned; a NEW item needs to be a NEW Item; not a relisted one.

A GTC rollover maintains the same item number. But this discussion is about a listing that ended and is relisted. It gets a new item number. It also retains the original listing's list date because of changes eBay made at the end of April.

Yes. The "newly listed" filter is exactly how I've done the overwhelming majority of my searches for 17 years.

To claim that a relist carrying a new listing date is a "scam" and that "buyers expect to see NEW items not relisted items" is ridiculous. Buyers expect to see what they are looking for in search.

Oftentimes when an item does not sell, the seller may switch from an auction style listing to a Buy It Now, or relist at a lower price, which is something many buyers, such as myself, are looking for when an item is initially listed at a higher price than we're willing to pay.

Sellers don't always relist on the same day the item's original listing ends, either. There could be a gap of days or even weeks between the old listing's end and the relist, thus, when the relisted item does not carry the new relisting date (as it did for many years and should again), people looking for that same item again may not realize that it's been relisted.

Other people doing the search for the first time will not have seen the original listing either, so for them, it does qualify as a new listing.
