Newbie question

I'm a new seller to ebay.  It's been fun and haven't had any big issues until today.  I received a message from a seller that an item I shipped was damaged.  It was a VERY sturdy mid-century metal pineapple ice bucket.  Though I'm new to ebay, I'm not new to shipping goods so it was packed with care.  He sent me photos showing an enormous crack (its 1/4" thick metal) and a 3" dent ( again, it's 1/4" thick metal)...but absolutely no damage to the box.  It's not adding up to me.  Does anyone have any advice? I have put in a claim with Fedex on his behalf and he is going to request a full refund from ebay.  Not how I wanted to start my week.  Thank you for any insight/suggestions.

You got a buyer that is replacing their old damaged item with your item.   Call Ebay and see if they can help you since the shipping box does not show damage.

I agree that the old "switch" scam is likely what's happening. It's an easy and simple way for a scammer or even a simple opportunist to get a free replacement for their own damaged item.

About 15 years ago, I had a similar situation with a $50 book I sold, brand new, factory shrinkwrapped and very well protected against shipping damage. The buyer messaged me (didn't file an INAD case), and included photos of supposedly the same book, looking like it got run over by a Mack truck. I messaged back to the buyer, "Even though it is in pieces, please return the book. As with all expensive books, we had placed an invisible secret mark on one of the pages. When we confirm that the book is the one we sent, we'll gladly refund your entire purchase price and you can keep the item or dispose of it as you wish. Then we'll notify the USPS Postal Inspectors so they can get to the bottom of who created the damage..."

I never heard from the buyer again, and he went onto our Blocked Buyer's List.  If his damage story was real, he would have sent the book back in anticipation of receiving a refund. I didn't really have a secret mark on one of the pages, but what I said flushed him out. Sometimes we sellers have to take the extra steps when buyer fraud is blatant or even merely suspected.

Re: Newbie question

Good comments here!

Communicate with buyer and state in a friendly manner that there is no damage to the shipping box in the photos they provided.

Communication is recorded in your eBay messages for you and the buyer. Some buyers will try to feel you out with an issue, but when you push back or question, they become silent.

my recommendations for shipping fragile items:

1. over pack (include safe material cost if needed in listing)

2. decide if you want to ship priority in your listings to prevent excessive handling and slow shipping

3. purchase labels like 'glass', 'fragile'. 'Handle with care'.

4. take photos of your packing process from the beginning to end including buyer's address and just keep on file for over 90 days in case of an issue. Not a solid fix, but shows you did your work.

Re: Newbie question

I think the op must have recognized her ice bucket from the pictures, since its a mid century,Italian, pineapple,$400, ice bucket.Cant imagine the buyer had an old one just like it.

Re: Newbie question

AHHH!  I remember using the old 'sellers mark'.  It got me out of so much trouble in the early days of the bay.

And I really did use a mark!

Many many buyers lost interest in returning once I told them about the mark.

The good old days!

But with all that damage to the item, and yet no damage to the box? The OP is right -- it doesn't add up.

Additionally, you'd be surprised at how many people could have the same item, no matter how old and rare. eBay, as well as many other online sites, is a perfect venue for finding replacements on practically anything. This buyer could easily have had one of the same ice buckets, damaged it, and wanted a replacement for free. Go online, and voila! There's another one.

My faith in the honesty of a minority but growing number of  buyers got a substantial reality hit by being a seller for 24+ years on eBay, especially with the spike in fraud within in the last 5 years.

Cheers, Duffy

Re: Newbie question

Most likely, given the item, not a switcheroo, but they unpacked it and dropped it.

Typical lack of personal responsibility.

Thank you! I immediately made him work to send more documentation. I will make him ship it back if I’m allowed to do that.

eBay does not require a buyer to prove anything or provide evidence (though that may be changing, heard eBay was testing the waters in some cases by insisting on photos, but this is not policy yet). So if the buyer opens a Not As Described claim, you will have no choice but to refund.

Re: Newbie question

I have put in a claim with Fedex on his behalf and he is going to request a full refund from ebay.”

In the above scenario, the buyer would then collect twice—once from the carrier and once from the eBay seller. This illustrates why shipping insurance is for the seller, not the buyer, and it is the seller’s responsibility to file with the carrier. The insurance makes the seller whole for damage in transit, after the buyer gets refunded by the seller.

Just to clarify, when you say the buyer is going to request a refund from eBay, that actually means you (not eBay the company).

Re: Newbie question

Plot twist - I asked him to go ahead and file an eBay claim and I would send him a return shipping label. He says he’s leaving the country on Friday and would have to take it with him and send it from Denmark. Really not sure what this is or what to do. What if I do nothing?

Re: Newbie question

Is this correct? I can don't have to do anything until he files a claim? I told him to file a claim and now he is saying he’s leaving the country on Friday and would have to take it with him so I would incur the shipping and tariffs, etc. does he think I’m just going to give him money without going through the proper eBay process? I’m so confused.

I'd say that's HIS problem. Don't do anything to make it yours.

Re: Newbie question

Ebay would not force you to provide international return shipping..i think you need to talk to them..this is getting scammier and scammier. try Ebay for Business on Facebook, they are very professional there..let me find the link.
