New in box but advertised "as is"? I need to respond

Hello,

I sold a calculator from 1997 sealed in its package and marked the condition "New" because it's unused.

Because it's untested I described it "sold as is",  with pictures of the long ago leaked batteries.

It was bought, and now the buyer wants a refund because the batteries damaged the owner's manual.

Am I wrong because I marked it "New" or safe because I described it "as is"? I did not accept returns on this.

doesn't matter how you list it, nobody reads anyway. You could put parts damaged, does not work, will damage other items and people still won't read that. You did nothing wrong, I have listed items the same way, I just use New Other and in the description details, list the added details. In the end, people have purchased it and didn't read the description.

Hi @rosachs  just to clarify, the condition choice is “For Parts/Not Working”, as opposed to For Parts/As is. There is no condition designation on eBay for  “As is”.

I've made that mistake before - not in the Condition (you pick those from a list) but in the Description.  I started in Computers, buying and selling parts - "As Is" was a clear signal of "not working".  🙂

Interestingly, I had an ancient laptop that I bought "for parts" due to a broken screen and failing battery.  This was back before laptops had to have a battery to boot if the AC adapter was connected, and they would default to the external monitor if one was attached.  So I plugged in the adapter, connected the monitor, mouse, and keyboard to my KVM switch, and used it for years as a secondary system that ran an instance of what is now SixBit -- which was how you kept your database up-to-date at that point in time (today the Agent is a background task that fires up with Windows and is always running, so no secondary system is needed).

If you have to patience and experience, For Parts is just another way of saying "Time to play!!"  🙂

Just to clarify, the calculator was not damaged. The batteries were packaged away from it and only damaged the user manual. The condition was described and the batteries were clearly pictured.

The only options I see are:  New,  New - Open Box,  Used, and For Parts or Not Working, and it doesn't seem to fit any of these. But it seems "New" wasn't it, heh.

Check out eBay's definition of Open Box for the category you listed in.  That may work if it allowed you to not include the manual and the batteries.  The batteries are probably trashed long ago, but the manual could be included in the shipment and NOT be part of the listing.  Open Box might allow for that.

At work, we deal with a lot of different inventory.  Some shrinkwrapped, some sealed (clear security sticker), some broken seal, some in damaged boxes, some that never were in any kind of retail packaging.  I have a shortcut in my browser to take me to that page when I'm not sure what category to use.  Once you find a useful Help page - bookmark it!  You don't want to spend the time looking again next time!  🙂
