NON N95 Mask sales could go BOOM through the roof!

Will the next millionaire be someone who produces custom decorative NON N95 masks?  Listening to the news I would hazard a guess that facial masks and coverings will be recommended for some level of protection against virus transmission via infected droplets ... and if I know my Americans the hardware store single color paint mask just ain't gonna cut it.  Like T-Shirts Americans will want to make a statement with their facial gear ...  they may want the Darth Vader look or Predator or a dog's snout, big smile, or some catchy phrase or statement ...

In preparation for this eBay needs to make sure their computer bots are NOT taking down NON N95 mask listings ... if they don't they will be doing a disservice to sellers offering all different kinds of masks as well as hurting themselves with the ability to make more fees on sold items.

Re: NON N95 Mask sales could go BOOM through the roof!

I got a bunch of fabric down in that basement of mine... no way I'm listing it...

1) I don't have a clue what the difference is between flannel, cotton, cotton blend, t-shirt material, ect.

2) I don't have a clue what the thread count is

3) I bought it years ago cause the kids like the patterns or the feel of it to make seat covers, curtains, and or doll blankets with and while there is 'yards' of the stuff the min I sell it that kid is going to come back and go "mom what happened to 'such and such' I need it for something"

4) It'll get pulled for the tragedy policy thingy

I hate photobucket right now... PS Answers given years ago may or may not be current now, please check with current posters to the boards to see if the information is still relevant.

Don't worry about any of that - just lot it up, do your best with the content (don't worry about thread count - that's just for bed linens) and list it.  I just sold about 4 lb of fabric to someone - whole mixture of this and that.

Great - remove another way for parents to get kids to do something other than sit on their phone or tablet all day.

They could have done the same thing Walmart did - limit the # of people allowed in the store at any one time, and maintain the 'social distancing' rules.

One doesn't need to go to Hobby Lobby (I won't set foot in it, anyway).  eBay and Etsy have tons of anything you can imagine (particularly Etsy).  Help the little seller, not the corporation with nutty owners!

Re: NON N95 Mask sales could go BOOM through the roof!

Hi @cynthealee2 You can read up on thread count here:

https://home.howstuffworks.com/home-decor/bedroom/thread-count.htm

In the link I have posted above - and to which you have replied - the article is recommending various types of fabrics for do-it-yourself face masks, based on scientific research on effectiveness. I strongly recommend sticking with the expert advice on this. I have no idea why anybody would suggest to ignore this important piece of advice thus potentially jeopardizing your health and those for whom you intend to make the masks. The tighter the fabric thread (= the higher the thread count), the less likely for the Corona viruses to penetrate that fabric and infect the person wearing it, or the other way around, infected people cannot infect others.

The importance of the thread count is established as the most important part of such a mask, because the size of this virus in much much smaller than than normal dust particles. Why would anybody construct a mask that is not, or not completely safe? To me, that would be a waste of time and money, not to mention, a high risk!

This pdf file by Avon Protection explains it all:

https://www.avon-protection.com/downloads/product_brochures/GR04471-01%20Coronavirus%20-%20WHITE%20P...

As to the Cotton, etc. fabrics mentioned in the article, they are talking about quilt-type thick Cotton as being among the best for this purpose. I am not sure you have any 100% Cotton quilts that are older and you could cut them up - but if you do, then that is one of the best options.

Good luck, and stay safe

Good afternoon gentlemen! I hope this finds you well and thanks for coming in today!  This thread I think warrants some serious consideration for the near future by eBay's upper management.  I have a sneaking suspicion that there is going to be a boom on "custom" facial protection and it would be a shame to see a missed opportunity for Sellers and eBay to offer another piece of personal apparel ... not to mention "enhancing the buying experience".

We're talking NON N95 masks, custom masks, decorative mask, expressive masks, etc.  These should be allowed to be sold as they would NOT be shorting healthcare providers of the mask types then need for their protection.

If the ban does not permit this kind of product then eBay should probably take down protective face gear for welding, wood cutting and other face protectors of a non-medical nature because those masks will suffice in blocking infected droplets ...

Here's another thought and situation eBay may be faced with ... lets say the medical profession comes out with a statement that 100% polyester clothing is the best material for protection against Covid 19 infection ... would eBay then take down ALL listings of clothing that are 100% Polyester?  I would certainly hope not but in the end have no idea what they would decide ...

Hi @mr_lincoln - thanks for this heads up! I don't have anything official to say about it, but will make sure that the right teams are aware.

As a total side note, how cool would a Darth Vader mask be?!

You could already do that. Most Vader masks cover the whole face and with a 'filter' for the mouth part you're good to go.

Re: NON N95 Mask sales could go BOOM through the roof!

First off I have quite a few listings online, they are the same listings give or take one or two that were there before this all started. I have had no trouble with ebay, I would suggest whatever you do... Do NOT start listing virus related wares that you didn't have before if you don't want to trip the bots.

You can list items for sale, but do NOT use the opportunity.

With me?

There are already plenty of fashion masks available, I have quite a few myself for my own use.

They come from China, so they won't be here in 3 days unless you're willing to pay more.

That being said...

Do NOT mention the keyword N95 anywhere in your listing.

Remember you do not have to say it's NOT something.

Matter of fact I normally report those "NOT keyword" listings for "search and browse manipulation" and I'm not talking just the masks either.

Re: NON N95 Mask sales could go BOOM through the roof!

For those of us who have handmade cloth mask listings being cancelled, will we be charged fees? The message that accompanies the takedowns seem to indicate there may be fees.
I would certainly welcome a better look at this situation. Cloth masks are not an essential necessity, so price gouging is not applicable. I have to think these takedowns are either the unintentional fallout from casting too wide a net, or overcompensation.

Re: NON N95 Mask sales could go BOOM through the roof!

@prettywoman-2012

I wasn't gonna list it anyway... the kids WILL go off when they come back in 6 months looking for it... so not worth the drama.

I don't know enough about fabric to list it correctly and it would come back to bite me as INAD's.  All I know is it was a) pretty,  and or b) soft or cuddly, and c) on the clearance rack when I bought it. I bought em years ago and have no way (since I won't let non currently living here family or others in the house) to have some one tell me what type of fabric they are.

LOL I don't even sew... we made the curtains and the 'blankets' with Stitch Witchery (iron fabric glue stuff), and we used hubby's big stapler to create the cushion covers.

Thank you tyler@ebay ... would just hate to see a viable opportunity slip by ... and to the side note, yes to D.V. along with many other possibilities ... if it goes long enough think we'll see some very creative face coverings.

brian@ebay   THAT is absolutely AWESOME!!!  I am really glad to see eBay taking that stance and I sincerely hope many can benefit from the opportunity ... there is a good chance it will be far reaching in scope for this year.  My sincere thanks Brian for taking the time to loop me in on the reply and announcement ...

NICE! Now maybe some creative eBay sellers will start making some cosplay style themed fabric face masks to purchase for those of us who lack the crafty talents.

well while y'all are spending your $ on masks of choice &/or donning yer masks of choice for that grand entrance into public space, in my area they never needed by the general public... although I guess they were an option if one really wanted to wear one ...

I just recieved an email from American Airlines earlier this morning informing me that a mask would be required by ALL passengers in order to fly until otherwise notified.

I have no doubt that other airlines as well as other forms of mass transportation will be following suit here shortly, if they have not already done so.
