Multiple IDs

I'm just wondering how many here may have multiple posting IDs and am just wondering why?

I've had this ID forever. Though I know some people like to change theirs every so often - I've been made aware of many with 3,4,5 different postings IDs and I don't understand why that's necessary. To move up on the kudo's board? To show more support for a post that isn't too popular?

We actually have a much smaller community than I thought and now that I'm aware of all these posting IDs - I'll be more conscious of who's posting what.  I was surprised at the multiple IDs some long term posters have.

If there is another reason people feel the need to have all these multiple ID's I'm just wondering what it is.

Multiple IDs

I'm not really aware of multiple posting IDs for that purpose only.

I know of a few that have multiple selling IDs that sometimes switch off between them here, maybe only because they forget to log out and in.

Possibly to show support of one id with their other id?

Not providing any ids or details, but I have seen this.

I guess if no one is supporting them, they bring out their imaginary friend to prove they are right and to champion their cause.

Just a thought.  YMMV

I believe I read a post from Alan that indicated that was the impetus for the addition of current Rule 7.

"Do not abuse Helpfuls. This includes soliciting others for helpfuls, giving an excessive number of helpfuls to a specific user or users, using multiple accounts to give yourself or others multiple helpfuls, and marking another member’s posts as helpful to help them get to the top of leaderboards."

Paraphrasing if I remember right, they found out that a couple of people had created IDs for just that purpose.

You're right, and it also happens on social media, different accounts that all belong to the same person..

I guess that fits with not admitting when you are wrong.

It's sad.

Why go to all that trouble when you can just call everyone ebay employees and shills?  LOL

Sometimes people with posting ids may inadvertently use their other id as was previously suggested.

I have seen that happen as well.

If I am having an argument with someone on twitter and I'm winning, a catfish account with 1 or 2 followers suddenly pops up to tell me the other person is right and I'm wrong. Happens all the time..

I don't post very often anymore, but I do read at least the thread titles daily to see if there is something I should know about and beware of.

I don't see these people with 3 or more ID's? Just how do you identify them? Unless you are on their computer, or they admit it to you? Maybe some people have similar word usage so they appear to be the same person?

I'd love to know just who you think is doing this. Most regular posters here have unique personalities, so I'm surprised that this has completely flown by me.

You say you have been "made aware" of these people. Isn't that just speculation on the part of whomever "made you aware"? Or do they truly have a way to check IP addresses?

I suppose these 3-5 posting ID's thing is possible and I just haven't been "made aware" by whomever has made you aware.  Makes me wonder if I am on their "list" LOL! If so, they are paranoid.

Do some people actually care about helpfuls and being at the top of the leader board ?

It baffles me why an adult would care about it, that kind of thing is for kids...

This could be part of it.  I have a couple of large chunks of explanatory text that I've saved as macros (Regional boxes, reserves, handling time, etc.) that I've seen turn up under other posters' IDs.  Nothing wrong with that; it's just basic information, not the Great American Novel, I'm actually flattered that somebody throught my writeup was useful.  But I can see the possibility that somebody might think that both IDs that post it belong to the same person.

I have posted with my main selling ID only when absolutely necessary, such as when asking a question related to one of my own listings.

I got up there a few times and I cut way back on posting so I would drop off.  At one point not too long ago, I was up there on five different boards here.  People may have thought I was crowing about it, but I was actually expressing my displeasure about the system.  I stopped posting as much on all five boards so I would fall off.

I suppose that could also be a reason for using multiple posting ID's: to spread out the "helpfuls" received amoungst multiple IDs and thus  stay away from the top of the boards.

But why would anybody care enough to use multiple IDs to either boost or hide their leaderboard position? Do people really look at that? (Of course, the next thing I do will be to check up  on my own position, LOL.)
