Message from eBay needs better wording to be understandable....

Received a message that my account was to be debited for outstanding fees and expenses. The way this is worded made me think I had a return, but I never received any notice of a return. Then I thought a buyer had opened a charge back, but also didn't have any notices of that. Then I thought USPS was charging me fees they felt I had underpaid. Basically I was going through every scenario trying to figure out why I had a pending charge because there was no explanation in the message from eBay. All it says is that they are debiting my account using my CC.

I placed my store on time away so after the latest deposit I have no current pending payments left in my account. That's when it dawned on me this is the start of the month and they are simply charging my store fees. Store fees, that what this is. Why couldn't they have worded the message as "your account is being debited for STORE FEES". Two simple words would have made all the difference.

Store fees....two simple words....

I'm guessing the system has 1 type of debit, as shown on the Payment-Report; for 'other fees' (which I see for 2nd category fees, Promotion fees on sales and once a month which also does NOT State 'Store Fee', just 'other fee' like all the other items on this report in that column). The 'other fees' are in 2 different columns, one being the .30c per transaction, the 2nd column being the actual FVF.

Yes I agree and part of the issue here. This generic labeling for fees they are choosing to use inadvertently creates situations which hinder effective communication....

Clarity is often not desired when corporations are trying to influence customers or manage vendors.  The murkier they can make it, the less we know about what they are really doing.  And the less we know, the less we can effectively complain/register our dislike.  And that's what they want - less 'noise' from the great unwashed masses (us).

May I suggest, EBay can easily afford the services of people with a degree in communications.

They already have them, and they are paid good money to ensure we receive communications that don't outright lie but that don't tell the full truth either.  Just enough truth in the unimportant stuff let's you get away with a lot less truth when it comes to the really important parts.  It's an art form.  They aren't called SpinMeisters for nothing, you know!

I received this yesterday.

In my case the charge is for two eBay Standard International Shipping Fees.  I confirmed it within the Managed Payments Transactions as they specific what listing the charges are against.

Someone not using due diligence may kick this back to their Credit Card Company as a Charge Back/Reversal.

"The reason for the charge was that you didn't have enough available funds to pay what you owed for previous transactions".  Wrong.

"The reason we charged your backup payment option was that you did not have enough available funds to pay for the charges detailed below.  If you feel you have been charged in error, please contact us at xxx-xxx-xxxx"

To be followed by the listingID, the name/description of the charge being made, and the amount, with a total at the bottom.

Of course, that would mean a lot more data would have to be shared between the process posting the charge and the process creating the message.  At that's more work that doesn't add to eBay's bottom line and is therefor unnecessary.

Which would be unfortunate because if they DID do that, they'd probably find themselves permanently banned from ebay without any way to fix it. 😐

Yes, this is the exact message I received, with all the generic wording. The message itself would be fine, they are only letting the account holder know in advance how much they are debiting, but it fails to explain, or even mention, the reason for the debit. That is what is missing....

Yes, ebay could hire better people, but when they outsource customer service to minimum poverty wages outside the USA, at the expense of American jobs, you know ebay is not interested in spending money.

Yes, I agree here with your response. I do believe this is purposely worded the way it is. I also believe this is an error on their part and other corporations who use this tactic, but as consumers we are forced to either accept or leave. I don't want to leave at this point, I'm making too much money selling online. I can still vent a bit though. Thank you for your responses, very insightful....

Re: Message from eBay needs better wording to be understandable....

I agree 100% the message "fails to explain, or even mention, the reason for the debit."

I knew where to look to find out about the charges only because I have been playing around with the Seller Hub for almost a year.  Nothing in the messages tell you about the charges.  Trying to find out by clicking on the link "See Charge Details" is pointless (for me) as it only took me to an nonsensical page that explained nothing.

On the eBay Standard International Shipping Fees there is no exact pattern that I have figured out as to when I will be billed.  It is random when I am billed but not until sometime after package is received at eBay Shipping.

I have my own Bookkeeping System of keeping track of what I owe and so far everything has worked out.  However it does seem like all the information could be put into the emailed notice instead of having to search different reports to find out what the charges are for.

Yes once it dawned on me what this was for I was fine, but we are all programed to think the worst. If only they would just word things differently from the start....

I feel the same way every time I get a letter from the IRS. All you need to do is slap on the envelope is, "This isn't bad." Or, "You're going to need some lube for this."

I'm usually sure it's not bad because it'll coincide with something to be expected, but even then. What if I'm wrong? heh.
