Member malicious attacks

I'm not weighing in on that one method is better than the other. And I do realize there's many reasons behind each method.

But I'm just curious, how many of you have actual undoubted proof that you've been attacked by a member on this board who has gone to your listings and purchased from you with the intention of hurting your seller account?

I used to gather personal information on posters to get to know them better. Personal names, spouses names, children, hometowns, etc ... basically everything. It wasn't a nefarious list but a way to connect with boardies over like the 17+ years I had been posting.

Dummy me shared the info with a fellow poster and she blew me up. Most didn't care but man were some not happy. Nasty nasty. Guess they could not take the idea that what you put out in public can be collected. Now my list is a walk down memory lane. And thus, my occasional *shout-out* to a poster who is long gone ...

The boards will never be the same.

OT, but that reminds me of how anyone can go online and find out how much someone paid for their house if you have their home address. Many people don't realize that and think it's an invasion of their privacy.

Exactly. That info is public and posted on multiple sites. And many many eBay members don’t realize how much info can be pulled up with just their name OR address. You can get a name just by searching for an address. There is so much on the internet that is easily found with minimal personal information.

Its really nothing new..............you may be surprised at what one could learn about another 30 years ago simply using a phonebook and the public records/tax office. Recordsof births and deaths were public infomation, the amount your property was taxed was public information, and before we became phobic over privicy, most former/current employers would "chat" about an employee on the phone when asked......................................

No said it was anything new. This discussion is about how easily you can find information on the internet.

Re: Member malicious attacks

We still use checks and have had to help train so many young sales clerks on how to run them through because our check is usually the first one they've taken (we have high turn over rates with employees at our local grocery stores). I even talked to a bank employee a couple of weeks ago who didn't seem to have a grasp on how checks were processed at most stores.

Does anyone remember blank counter checks?

In the early to mid 1980s a lot of the stores we wrote checks to required 2 forms of ID--your driver's license and usually the second ID being a credit card.

The state I currently live in has a law where regular civilians can't look up  what other folks paid for their house. Just a ballpark amount.

I get where you're coming from. Many of us have become friends after years on these boards but sometimes there are so many things going on in each others life - you want to keep things straight when inquiring about something someone has posted.

I myself have a list of the multiple IDs people here have just so I know who I'm talking too as often they take a break from listing and post with one of their selling IDs vs their posting ID. I'm not trying to invade anyone's privacy - just trying to keep people straight.

Re: Member malicious attacks

I had forgotten that once upon a time, My drivers license # and SS# were the same. When you wanted to pay with a check, The clerk almost always wanted that number as proof of identity. If it was n't on your check, the clerk would copy it off your license onto the check.

40-50 years ago people wrote bad checks. Common thing back then. Identity theft IMO didn't become common (Or at least known) until the invention of the Internet.

Exactly.  And it was common to request such.  I know I once had a lady try to pay with a check and I asked for id.  She got all huffy and walked out

Re: Member malicious attacks

Regarding the original topic - back when, can't remember how far back, a troll came in and read the boards.  If I remember right, he was from Britain and these were the USA boards.  He never posted at all, but he went after everyone who posted that day - messed with seller's listings, which were all auctions at that point, bid up the auctions that buyers were bidding on so they all lost, but of course never paid for anything.

At the time my userID was my email address.  I wasn't buying or selling anything because I used to take the summer off, so he signed my up for a huge stack of porn sites, which eventually infected my computer with viruses and caused me no end of grief.  That's when I started a posting ID.

And in my state, they just took the SS#s off licenses about 4-5 years ago.

Re: Member malicious attacks

@bigdeals.etc  I've often thought about that but for the most part I try to facilitate a support role here mixing in a little levity now and then.  On some subjects I have a strong opinion but that's more about eBay's decision making and functionality (or lack of) ... certain topics and discussions I stay away from ...

I've disagreed with members here and hopefully they view this in a like manner, its business not personal.

Re: Member malicious attacks

Our bank currently advises NOT to have phone numbers pre-printed on personal checks for security reasons. I guess there's a lot of info. crooks can get just from your phone number?

I don't post my actual town's name on my Ebay listings due to a few past weird Ebay transactions & communications.

Re: Member malicious attacks

When I opened my coin shop I wanted my home phone number to be unlisted. That was before cell phones. SO my home phone number is in all the area phone books along with my home address.

This was a free service that the phone company provided so you could actually make and receive phone calls without a struggle to get a number.

Free service? Until you didn't need it. I remember paying $7.00 per month for years to have my number unlisted.

By the way Young Grasshoppers. My first cell phone was purchased at Radio Shack for $450.00 (In 1989)
and weighed about 20 Lbs.

Any place you buy from has this information and when I say any I mean all! Unless you pay with cash.

Re: Member malicious attacks

Use a posting I.D. and you won't even have to worry about it. The only problem you will have with doing that is some will say your comment doesn't count even though what you say is true.
