I'm not weighing in on that one method is better than the other. And I do realize there's many reasons behind each method.

But I'm just curious, how many of you have actual undoubted proof that you've been attacked by a member on this board who has gone to your listings and purchased from you with the intention of hurting your seller account?

I do. There was one well-known poster back in the days when the auction listings board was still here.

She got annoyed at me for various reasons and bought several items over the course of several months. She would use different names, but the stuff always went to the same town in NJ, and was bought from the same PayPay.

She always opened a return, destroyed the item and left negative feedback.

I finally just shut that account down for a while. eBay admitted they could link the accounts but they couldn't do anything to stop her from creating new accounts.

I'm a buyer only, so I know it hasn't happened to me, but that's why a lot of people who post on this board use either their buying account or a posting id.

I witnessed one episode on these boards where a poster went after a seller, and I do believe s/he ended up buying something from that seller and vaguely threatening to make sure the transaction went bad. I don't think, however, that the person actually went through with any kind of revenge. There was just too much evidence against him/her in case of trouble. It was pretty ugly to watch.

I recall that incident and it worked out for the seller but I do believe that had the maniac not publicly announced his intent & caught certain people’s attention, it would have ended badly for the seller. But thankfully, it ended well 🙂

Not this board but the fine jewelry board.

My proof - the basement dweller bought from me on the same account he used to post on the boards..

Pointless, even hiding behind a posting ID ebay can link the two in seconds.

It's the equivalent of throwing yourself out of a party.

I don't remember hacking but I do remember a buyer from England who systematically went after the accounts of several people who posted on a particular thread. Ebay would shut her down and she would start a new id. I think some sellers had malicious interference that took weeks to clear up. I think Ebay's better now at tracking ids than they used to be.

I was threatened once by a poster who lived in a nearby town. I actually went to the police. She stopped after I did that.

Around 16 years ago, someone didn't like what I said here and created an ID that clicked Buy It Now on around 30 of my listings worth about $20K.  At that time, I didn't have immediate payment required.

No, because I don't have access to your IP address.

What are you talking about? Who's hiding behind a posting id? What two accounts can eBay link?

What is pointless?
