Mark as payment received???

Nother thing I don't recall ever seeing before (tell me if it's old news).
But I really don't get this.  'Mark as shipped' -that I get, because you might get your label elsewhere or use postage stamps for paper items.  But how on Earth could eBay not know if a buyer has PAID for an offer/auction item???

(In this screenshot I'm also showing what the dropdown menu includes, in case anyone's curious).

Mark as payment received???

That would make sense but my listing wasn't a local pickup, in fact I've never offered that.

It's shown on every unpaid transaction. Doesn't matter if your listing meets one of the special circumstances for other forms of payment.

It's probably meant for situations like cash on delivery/local pickup.

It's been there forever. Buyers used to pay by check in the mail back in the early days.

It still has relevance for local pickup transactions and transactions in a short list of categories where alternative forms of payment are acceptable such as checks, money orders, wire transfer and more.

Thank you.  I guess I have somehow just never noticed it before (it's way down the page, under 'Send Offers!' and so on).

But now I'm wondering, how does cash for in-person pickup work, as far as eBay getting their fees goes?  I assume that would just become a charge on the seller's account balance.  But what if a crooked seller just didn't mark the sale as paid?

Ebay doesn't change these options to adjust to whatever criteria you have on your listing. They are blanket functions to cover all listings. This option has been there since forever and I've never really thought into it but as others say probably to cover for local pickup, something that I never allow.

On side note, it's funny how ebay has the function to leave feedback in the dropdown. Lol, ebay looooooves to make sure buyers get their positive feedback don't they. It'd like them to also add a "block buyer" function below that one to balance it out.

A "crooked seller" could definitely do that, but then eBay might still charge them the fees for trying to take the transaction off-site if they get caught.  It's not worth the risk, but that doesn't mean some sellers might not try, and many might even get away with it.  Depends on how eBay identifies when that kind of thing is happening, I'm not sure how they detect it beyond just catching people trying to send contact information via messages.

The fact that cash payments and/or local pickup are not offered does not prevent them from happening.

I don't follow. If eBay really wanted to "make sure" buyers got positive feedback, they would make feedback mandatory and not optional.
