Local pickup only- buyer requesting shipping

I have a large piece of machinery about 2000lbs listed and just sold to someone with 0 reviews. I had it listed as local pickup only but buyer is requesting to have shipped. While I am not opposed to shipping if buyers pays but could this be a potential scam?

Re: Local pickup only- buyer requesting shipping

Never mind a potential scam.

I would be worried about a possible return.

Guess who pays return shipping on a return?

I would just say NO.

Yep, could be a scam.  Tell buyer "come and get it".  Buyer saw the "local pickup only".  If you ship it you will have major responsibility - how to select and pay the shipper, damage during shipment, item not received as described and buyer wants a refund, buyer wants to return......etc . Good luck!!

Shipping via freight is risky business. If the buyer files a Item Not As Described return case, you have to pay to have it shipped back.  You lose shipping costs both ways. Expensive.... And that is, IF you actually get the item back.

I would make the buyer come pick it up or cancel the sale selecting problem with buyer's address.

@wazmason

Stick to your guns...tell them local pick up only.  Period. If they give you a hard time about it, block them.

Happy Selling!

Re: Local pickup only- buyer requesting shipping

Do not ship at all!

Pick-up only as stated in listing. Inspect and pay then.

Zero feedback just seems to be another red flag. If they were a serious buyer and a seasoned eBayer, they know the process. Seems like someone looking for a freebie.

A real serious buyer for whatever type of machinery you are selling will come and check it out first before purchasing.

Re: Local pickup only- buyer requesting shipping

Do I have the risk of buyer wanting to return if they select and arrange/pay for pickup by carrier?

I have no problem canceling the sale but this could be a lucrative deal and am willing to jump thru some hoops.

Your making a lot of sense. This could be a lucrative deal and I was excited to make it work.

@wazmason

Many ways you can be scammed by buyers- even if you meet all of eBays requirements/suggestions. Cancel with reason problem with shipping address.

Trust goes both ways. If you decide to ship:

1.) Have buyer provide eBay pickup QR code and scan before shipping the item.

2.) Have buyer provide shipping/payment. After sell you are allowed to contact buyer.

3.) Be financially prepared to lose your item and all associated payments.

From what I read on eBay Help - having a scanned QR code does not 100% protect you from eBay's Money Back Guarantee - but it should stop item not received claims. I do not see eBay clearly stating you do not have to provided return shipping even though it is local pickup - or if they return a rock you will not be stuck with refunding.

Re: Local pickup only- buyer requesting shipping

You certainly may have a risk of returns with this:

  • Sold as is and not accepting returns
  • We are a reseller and make no guarantees but assume that it is in working condition

I know nothing about selling large equipment......but that just flat scares me.......$4800 item.

Re: Local pickup only- buyer requesting shipping

This one is very easy.  Immediately cancel the transaction with problem with buyer's address.  BLOCK the buyer. Do NOT even respond to their emails.  If you relist it here, write LOCAL PICKUP in the title and at least 3 times in the description.  Use BOLD letters "  LOCAL PICKUP"    Also write incase your buyer(s) are stupid  or think that they can convince you to ship.   " This item is ONLY local pickup. I will NOT ship this item. It's too big/heavy".      NEVER let a buyer change the way that you want to ship (get rid of the item).  NEVER.

What I do with really expensive local pickup is to meet at my bank. They are really helpful with this sort of high dollar transaction.

A banking associate will sit down with both parties and draw up a simple bill of sale. Money is transferred at the bankers desk. Your banker will verify the validity of the buyer's check and deposit your money right then and there. No chance of any type of chargeback.

I would be selling this item without the help of eBay.

Have to list it elsewhere.

Yes you still do. If they get the item and then say it’s not as described you get to pay to get the item back. IF you get it back. They could ship back their broken machine, a giant boulder whatever and ebay will not care. You would have to sue the buyer in court and prove they sent the wrong item back.

If they pick up the item they have to give you the code that ebay sends them. Though that helps protect you a little it against they never received the item but it still won’t protect you against a not as described claim.

Then Have the buyer come get it and pay you cash.

Your risk on this sale is way too high. Your terms of sale are invalid as ebays terms trump yours.

I suggest you search local pickup sales on this forum and see what can happen and how to protect yourself. There’s lots of posts on the subject.
