Listing Practices

What is the deal with the way eBay lets sellers list things on here?  Here is an example of what I mean... If a seller has a Contemporary Sectional Sofa Set listed for $109.00 with free s/h, isn't that saying the (whole) item is $109.00? Maybe I'm a fool to think this could actually be, but 20 yrs ago you could find good deals on eBay. Well get this. You click on the item description (picture of a full sectional couch and $109 price) and behold the glorious drop down menus. You click on the dd menu and there is everything from left side arm chair thru right arm chair and all the pieces in between, each a different price with the lowest piece being $109. All the other pieces go up in price. Also on the drop down menu there are 2 thru 7 piece options. The 2 pc. option is $289 and the 7 pc. is $979.  $979- 109=$870. So actually if you want what the seller has pictured with the price of $109 it's gonna cost you that plus $870. To me this is totally misleading and straight up bull**bleep**. If nothing else it is a very **bleep**ty selling practice. Sure the sellers do it to save on listing costs but eBay shouldn't allow it. There are numerous items listed on eBay in the same fashion. To me this sucks and so does eBay as long as they let this continue.

Ok, if you want specifics, the ebay item # is 323978313906. Also what I'm talking about doesn't have multiple prices on the listing.

That seller must have changed the way they list it because I am seeing multiple prices without having to click on the item. The price range is from $109-$979. So it seams the seller is not violating any policy according to trinton.

Re: Listing Practices

That guy is a real jewel.   His feedback isn't so great but his highly professional (not) reply to his neg makes him a good seller to avoid.

I'm thinking the best reason to report him would be fee avoidance.   We all know ebay HATES fee avoiders.

This is a variation listing.

What happens is the LOWEST price in the variants gets viewed/searched, so it appears that the item (according to the description) is at $109. Of course, when you enter the listing, it shows you the different variations at much higher prices.

It's a way for sellers to get their more expensive items in a higher search result, especially those that sort by price. It's a shame, too - because legitimate sellers will also use variation listings, sometimes with a legitimate price variation.

Unfortunately, Ebay uses a VERY passive, reactive policing method; they rely on users to report the seller/listing rather than having someone at Ebay screen listings and sellers. The only thing you can do is report the violation.

Re: Listing Practices

I don't know what he's done but I do Know that I just punched in the 12 digit item number in the search bar and it pulled up 2 different item listings under the same seller and same item number. Yes the first one did state a from $ to a to$$$. The second one was still just like I said. 1 listing, 1 picture of the (whole) furniture set with a price listed as 109.??.  Now I want to know how are there two listings of the same item number, each with different descriptions and prices?

Re: Listing Practices

The second one is a sponsored listing, I guess that's why it's a little different.
It's a China seller if that tells you anything.

Re: Listing Practices

On the subject of reporting an item my first problem is I don't know all the tech terms for the ebay lingo so having only drop down menus on the reporting page doesn't help much. Why can't ebay just make it where you can fill in with your own words what the problem I'm having is with the item listed? ( The drop downs don't always have the answers. Seems like ebay is trying to pre-guess us). Next, after I've gone thru the 3 drop down menus with what I think is the correct reason for reporting the item I go to hit send and I get a (red) message to enter the appropriate item number. So it won't send. Well,  the item number is already in there, at the top. If that's not what it's asking for then where am I supposed to fill it in? In other words, I haven't been able to report anything

Hi @rrar1965, happy to elaborate on this; the different reasons selected will determine what team reviews the report and what priority the report receives. As you can imagine, some violations warrant more immediate attention (such as human trafficking or prohibited firearms being listed). Every report is reviewed, but the type of report is very important to ensure the appropriate action is taken. Being able to fill in your submission would likely lead to incomplete reports and reduced accuracy overall.

The options that are appropriate to select for this situation are Listing practices > Search and browse manipulation > Other search and browse manipulation. If you can tell me which options you selected and provide me with a screenshot of the error message you received, I will be happy to look into this further!
