Listing Practices

What is the deal with the way eBay lets sellers list things on here?  Here is an example of what I mean... If a seller has a Contemporary Sectional Sofa Set listed for $109.00 with free s/h, isn't that saying the (whole) item is $109.00? Maybe I'm a fool to think this could actually be, but 20 yrs ago you could find good deals on eBay. Well get this. You click on the item description (picture of a full sectional couch and $109 price) and behold the glorious drop down menus. You click on the dd menu and there is everything from left side arm chair thru right arm chair and all the pieces in between, each a different price with the lowest piece being $109. All the other pieces go up in price. Also on the drop down menu there are 2 thru 7 piece options. The 2 pc. option is $289 and the 7 pc. is $979.  $979- 109=$870. So actually if you want what the seller has pictured with the price of $109 it's gonna cost you that plus $870. To me this is totally misleading and straight up bull**bleep**. If nothing else it is a very **bleep**ty selling practice. Sure the sellers do it to save on listing costs but eBay shouldn't allow it. There are numerous items listed on eBay in the same fashion. To me this sucks and so does eBay as long as they let this continue.

Re: Listing Practices

Correct, buyers hate it. With that said, typically that I know of on the listing page it shows a price "range", say $20-$109 not just the $109 price. When you see listings set up that way it is a tale-tell sign that that are various items to choose from and not just a single sofa.

Hi @rrar1965, this is actually an example of something that may violate our Search & Browse Manipulation policy. You can report this directly from the listing and we'll take appropriate action. We do have filters in place to prevent large price differences between variations, and will review proactively for potential violations. If you see something that we missed, don't hesitate to report this and we'll review!

Maybe I am missing something. Type contemporary sofa and on the first page of 50 listings there are 7 listed as the OP describes. Are you saying those are against Ebay listing practices ?

Re: Listing Practices

One thing about eBay, no barriers to entry for sellers and buyers. The long term effect is the site will continue to decline.  eBay is losing their buyers which is why they focus so much on keeping them.  ( Not all buyers are the same just as not all sellers the same) They are correct in assuming there will always be sellers. Among the many issues with sellers there are many sellers who are merely stealing listings from other sellers and then under cutting them price wise. One thing is certain, the market does not lie as eBay sales are falling in an otherwise growing market.

On another note, we suggested that they give sellers an anti-defect when they, for example they does some great acts for buyers to off-set defect which somethme occur due to platform  glitches or due to 3rd party faults.  So far nada

They aren't doing it to save on listing costs.

They are doing it to manipulate the search engine so they appear at the top when people sort by Lowest Price First.

Re: Listing Practices

I'm not convinced this is something eBay does anything about. In the electronics field this form of search manipulation is out of control. It is one of the reasons I have kinda stopped buying again on eBay. Between the bad results and search manipulation I can no longer feel like I am getting a good deal. If something is out of stock in a listing then that shouldn't count as the lowest price even if it isn't search manipulation. As far as I am concerned the search engine should base the order on the lowest price of the item that is in stock.

Re: Listing Practices

So it's wrong then isn't it, the way that they list it?

Re: Listing Practices

Ok, if you want specifics, the ebay item # is 323978313906. Also what I'm talking about doesn't have multiple prices on the listing. The listing's I'm speaking of have a picture of 1 item or a set of the item for one stated price. Only when you click on the item to see the item specifics is when the drop down menus appear with multiple prices. I could deal with it a little better if there was a from $$ to $$$$ on the initial listing.

Re: Listing Practices

Sellers shouldn't be allowed to list multiple items with multiple prices under one listing. One listing-one price- one fee. That's how it used to be. None of this b u l l s h I t manipulation of multiple items, multiple prices for one listing.

Hi @coolections, as I stated in the portion of my post you have quoted, what the OP has described could be violations of our policies. Please report any concerns you have directly from the listing and we will review.

Some of these guys are pretty smart ........?  I've got one I've reported several times, several items.......he includes this statement in the descriptions:

If you do bid, which I do not recommend, then you must pay $ 253.00 to cover the high and usury seller fees of $ 33.00 that I will incur. Ebay is a scam for selling. Ebay seller fees are very high and criminally usury. Ebay are real crooks and they make all their money by ripping off sellers with very high fees as high as 20% and by never paying taxes. It will be much easier to pay in cash than to bid on eBay and have to pay through Pay Pal and you will save money by not having to pay the high eBay fees.

he includes this in titles:

CASH for all

He runs listings for 10 day auction and either ends them prior to the end or ebay makes him end them (says seller ended item due to error in listing), and then immediately relists.......

He runs ok listings, if you consider the statement both the Post Office and ebay are crooks ok.....right now 10 of those, 4 of the "illegal ones".

Seems like he may be slipping under the radar since he's ending the items perhaps before ebay can get to them?

Any suggestions?

Hi @dhbookds, email some item numbers and I will follow up to your reports to see what happened. I may not be able to provide you with an update or additional detail, but I'll make sure this addressed appropriately.
