Just some food for thought on sellers vs buyers...

I've had a bit of free time on my hands to read through some of the boards this week, mainly spurred through my own frustrations as a seller with recent issues and glitches. I am also a buyer, as many of us are.  I've had pictures disappear, views not showing up, limited visibility of my listings,  and most recently, incorrect shipping costs shown to buyers on best offers (and then correct costs showing up at checkout).

   However irritating these issues may be to me (yes, my sales are down also), and even though there are scamming buyers out there, there are still many, many, many sellers who don't treat this like a business. Some are small, some are large.

I have a lot of first time buyers finding my items through Google searches, and I think about whether or not they would ever buy again on Ebay if I didn't provide as good of a customer service experience as I possibly can.

   In my mind, Ebay is right to side with the buyers, and cater to the buyer's experience, even though I DO NOT always like how it affects me as a seller (especially lately).  I take appropriate precautions, like not shipping to countries that I have had issues with, and trying not to sell in categories that are fraught with scams on the part of both buyers and sellers. There is still no better venue for my merchandise, other than loading the trailer every weekend to attend swap meets.

    I mentioned this in another post, but it's worth repeating. I also teach at a community college, and I see the same mindset of immediate gratification and incompletely researching a topic or item before making a decision that I see in many of my buyers. It's really a societal shift, in my opinion.

    The reality is that if I want to continue to sell on a faceless website where my buyer's can't develop immediate trust by me shaking their hand and looking them in the eye, then I have to cater to the changing societal demographics of buyers and their changing expectations. It's not easy, and sometimes costs me money, but I view that as a cost of doing business on the Internet in a world where online scamming proliferates. Even though someone may be thoroughly versed in Twitter, Snapchat,  for us "seasoned" folk Facebook, and every other social media platform, there is still a presumption, to a degree, that you may get scammed buying something online.

     Have I been actually scammed by a buyer? Sure I have.  More than once. The actual percentage is pretty low, though. In my opinion, I can't manage the other 99.5% of my potential buyers due to the actions of the .5%.  It's like the Craigslist car ad that screams "PRICE IS FIRM!! NO OFFERS!! DON'T EVEN TRY!!". That's not good business sense for attracting potential purchasers.

    I'll get off my soapbox now, but seriously -  if you haven't yet, read some of the stories on the buyer issue board. Too many basic customer service issues for any selling platform to ignore. Some are the fault of the selling platform, and glitchy or unituitive software, but most are not the fault of the buyer.

I agree with you. I am a full time seller on here and I absolutely try to give each and every customer the best service as possible. Yes I have had one or two problem buyers or scammers but for the most part I love my customers and have all been easy to work with. I have too made mistakes and definitely made it right with the customer, they were happy and I received outstanding feedback. I also have read the buyers boards and some sellers are scammers, no communication, just other basic things that could make experience better. If you can't treat it like a real business then don't sell on here. Every one deserves good experience, buyer and seller. All I can continue to do is do my best on my end.

Thanks for your post. I always try to take care of my customers 100% of the time...and have been scammed from time to time too. I agree (thanks for the reminder) that the majority of time my customers are great. I do get frustrated with all the changes but your post helped me to see why some of the changes probably occured. Maybe eBay could have "thinned" out the bad sellers instead of placing tougher standards on all of us but I guess they are just asking everyone to step up and do a better job which isn't a bad thing.  Possibly this will help get any rotten apple sellers out of here. I have seen some buyer threads where the seller has really failed the buyer and ebay too. As a seller, sometimes I don't think of what some honest buyers may also be experiencing and how that could affect all us sellers when the honest buyers decide to go to other ecommerce sites to buy because of a bad experience with a seller that don't take care of business like they should. Thanks again for the different perspective!

Yes I agree with that for sure. There are a lot of great buyers out there too and I have seen some of the things that they have gone thru with a seller and I just don't understand sometimes. I want everyone to be treated right.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I'm a buyer only.

Last week, I was doing a little online shopping. I tried to put some items in my card from a vendor who had listed maybe thirty items in one listing. They were like those old Dewey Decimal cards used in the card catalogues used by libraries. Anywho, the cart function was not working. It told me the cards I had selected weren't available and whatever.

I contacted the vendor via the messaging system and explained the checkout problem. She said she wondered why no one was buying her items! Bottom line, she got it fixed and I was able to place my order.

Today, I received the order. The seller had included a handmade necklace charm that said "friend," wrapped in a little piece of decorative paper with a ribbon around it. She also included a very nice handmade card with a handwritten note thanking me for alerting her to the checkout problem and, of course, for my order. Fabulous customer service. I'm definitely going to buy from her again.

Did I mention this purchase was not made on eBay? I've been buying here twenty years and, in my experience, that kind of personal touch faded away from eBay years ago. For those of you who remember when buyers sent personal checks to sellers, I always sent mine in a little notecard with a personal, handwritten note, and usually got some kind of handwritten thank-you in return. I miss that. Nowadays, I'm shocked if a seller even bothers to print "thank you" on an invoice.
