Java Script & Plug Ins

@shipscript

I got my notice from ebay and they say I have about 16 listings that need to be modified.  I tried to use the links that are provided on here, but I'm not getting anything.  It says no changes were made.  I don't get it.  Ebay says I have things that need to be changed, but the links to see the changes say I have no changes.  Help, please!!  I have no idea how to fix these or my templates.

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

Hello Shipscript,

I have just used your AMAZING, WONDERFUL, very informative editor !

THANK YOU for creating this !

Question - after I copied &pasted the Filter tab results from the 1st scan - back into your editor - then looking at the Filter tab the 2nd time (with some issues fixed from the 1st scan), I get this result:

!-- 2017.04.06: Active Content was not detected but 36 links were found with 0 repaired. --

In your editor (not my listing yet) I added this line to my HTML code (took out the <> to make sure would show on this board?)

meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"
font rwr='1' size='4' style='font-family:Arial'><style>img{max-width:100%}</style

The question - the links seem to work in your editor - do they need to be fixed ? Are they compliant with Active Content rules ? If not, how do I fix ?

Thank you, Thank you

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

Hello Shipscript,

Sorry to throw all this at you (hope to hear back from you)     ; )

Running a test on ebay.  Using your editor (thank you), this is now the Newest version of my listing (using the Filtered tab results):

Listing 112361282032 - test listing

Issues:

Used your link to - "Moble Friendly ?"

Result:

"Content wider than screen width" - not sure what the issue is.  How to fix ?

When using your "Click a width to see how your page might fit on smaller devices" - my test listing has No horizontal bar from 640 and up.  At 480 and 320 there is a horizontal bar.

Also, after using your editor, my store search link ("Search my eBay Store:") does not work now.

Thank you

@hardrockpinstore

If link targets are a problem, the tool will repair them. If there are no link problems the message says zero were repaired.  As nominal as targets seem, this is actually a repair you will want to make because you have links to your store categories that would fail to perform under the coming ban.

Store search boxes will not be allowed and the action will be removed. To get rid of the visible search box itself, use the custom settings and checkmark "find and mark <form>...</form> ".  But the phrase "search my store" will still remain unless you custom remove that as well.

While your table shrinks pretty well and your product photos shrink, the width problem is the result of the store thumbnails that are stacked across the page with no flexibility. That means you shouldn't add the viewport meta tag because your listing won't fit all viewports.  Your thumbnails are larger on some pages than others, so the amount the page will shrink can be different for a different item.  162316141156

There is probably some way to rework those thumbnails and tables by adding a stylesheet, but if you plan to redo all of your templates anyway (which I wholeheartedly recommend), I probably wouldn't worry about that level of effort just yet.

In fact, since the only active content in the test listing is the store search and mouseover coloring on the store thumbnails, I think I would focus on preparing a new mobile friendly template rather than removing the active content that will simply fail to perform under the ban.

Thus, I think your focus should be placed on repairing links and creating a template that can be viewed on mobile devices.

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

Shipscript,

Thank you very much for the quick reply.  And thank you for the suggestions.

Just a few questions.

Please keep in mind that I once knew how to do basic HTML but now I am Very rusty.  When I said I was going to redo the templates, I meant just do the minimum to get A.C. and Mobile compatible. Not create a whole new template.

1.)  Just to confirm - my “36 links were found with 0 repaired” - so I don’t need to fix/repair ? OR do I have to correct each one with - target="_blank"

For example, in the editor, this line of text is yellow (for link). It has this version of the target.
A href="http://stores.ebay.com/HardRockPinStore_Holiday-Gifts-5-to-200_W0QQfsubZ20" target=_blank>

2.)  You said I “shouldn't add the viewport meta tag because your listing won't fit all viewports” [OK I will take this out] and “thumbnails that are stacked across the page with no flexibility” . . . . “probably some way to rework those thumbnails and tables by adding a style sheet”.

Is there a way, could you point me in the direction for some information ?

3.)  How do I make this template mobile ready ?  Again, a site I can view or information ? - is the goal to have the page scale down to 480 and 320 with No horizontal bar to be mobile compatible.

4) You said, “which I wholeheartedly recommend” - doing a new template. Is there a specific reason ?  Page doesn’t look good or the code is a mess ? Or ?

5.) “162316141156”.  Was I supposed to see or learn something from this listing or just a mistake ?

THANK YOU !

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@hardrockpinstore

1) Just to confirm - my “36 links were found with 0 repaired”

-Yes, those links are fine. They already have the target so zero repairs were required.

2) “probably some way to rework those thumbnails and tables by adding a style sheet”.

- try these filters in the Sandbox tool:

http://www.isdntek.com/ebaytools/ActiveContentSandbox.htm

?itm=381885446022&fm=true&act=true&lnk=true&vp=true&filter=%253C%253C%252BBEFORE%253E%253E%7C%7C%250A%253Cstyle%253E%250Aimg%2520%257Bmax-width%253A100%2525%253B%2520%257D%250A%2540media(max-width%253A640px)%257B%250Atable%2520%257B%2520border-collapse%253Acollapse%253B%2520border%253A0%253B%2520%257D%250Atd%2520%257Bdisplay%253Ablock%253B%2520width%253A100%2525%253B%2520border%253A0%253B%2520box-sizing%253Aborder-box%253B%257D%250A.storename%2520font%257B%2520font-size%253A1.8em%257D%250A%257D%2C%253Ctd%2520width%253D%252292%2525%2522%7C%7C%253Ctd%2520width%253D%252292%2525%2522%2520class%253D%2522storename%2522%2CSearch%2520my%2520eBay%2520Store%253A%7C%7C

Open the Custom filters and click the link at the center bottom that says "code filters".  Paste this filter and click "Use filters". You'll then see what the decoded filters are doing.

3) Getting down to 480 is pretty good if your text is large enough, as some mobile devices will simply shrink the whole page. However, getting down to little or no scrolling at 320 would be best because then you could add the viewport tag. See the above filters.

4) The page is too busy and the format is not really mobile workable, but we tried.

5) I probably posted someone else's item number (looking at too many at the same time).

Use the @ symbol to call me back to this thread, just as I called you.

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@shipscript

Thank you shipscript for the style sheet - I feel with your help, we are so close !

1.)  After trying the filters in the Sandbox tool, I deleted (thumbnails, etc) some parts of my listing.

This is the Newest Listing going forward - 382047640150.  It is currently listed as a Test.

I changed the <td width="92%" - in the Newest Listing to 99% - but while in the Sandbox tool using the style sheet I left the td width at 92.

2.)  As I mentioned, I took out all of the thumbnail/links (and deleted some text, etc) -

In the Newest Listing (Not using the style sheet), everything is fine at 640.

At 480 and 320 there is an issue (see below for issues when using the style sheet).

QUESTION:

[480 and 320] At the right hand side of the listing (when looking in the Sandbox) - just below “RETURN POLICY and CONTACT:” - this table is larger than the table below it.  I tried to have it scale down as the table below it does, but I don’t know what I am doing wrong.

Could you take a look at this issue - I feel it must be something simple but I tried 6 or 7 things - nothing worked.

Solving this would make 480 ok.

3.)  320 same issue as above but worse. Also, just not scaling down enough. There is horizontal scrolling.

I feel the problem is my formatting of the DESCRIPTION section, SHIPPING section, etc (the left side).  But from 640 and up, I like this formatting and also I think it makes it easier to read my long listings (so I am hoping there is someway to keep this formatting).

QUESTION:

Again, I don’t know what to do about this issue.

4.)  Using the style sheet in the sandbox. The problem is the borders and the formatting.

At 640 the borders disappear and the formatting is slightly changed

At 480 the borders disappear and the formatting is changed

At 320 the borders disappear and the formatting is changed even more from scaling down.  BUT, the listing looks Mobile Compatible (No scroll bar - but with the issues of no borders and the formatting looking weird).

5.) Like I said - so close ! I hope you have a little more magic up your sleeve for me ?

I can see what you mean about the listing being busy - but I do like the formatting on larger screens.  Please let me know - everything you have already done is greatly appreciated !

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@shipscript

CONTINUED -

Hopefully helping you, with listing how I feel about these issues:

At 480.  I guess I would like to keep the borders and formatting (if the 480 issue can be fixed).

At 320.  If the choice is between borders and formatting - I feel I could live with a little horizontal scrolling (I hope my buyers feel the same) while keeping the borders & formatting as the page scales down.

In a perfect world, the borders & formatting, as I have them, would stay as the page scaled down (from 640 to 320).   I’m not sure if a knew style sheet could solve this ? ? ?

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@hardrockpinstore

Add the red to the line that holds your storename. That allows us to identify that element so we can shrink the title on a mobile device, which allows the page to collapse more.  That will also resolve the problem you see with the top table being wider than the one below it, and will get you down to 320 so you can use the viewport tag.

<TD width="99%" class="storename"><FONT face=Verdana color=#000000 size=7><B>HardRockPinStore</B></FONT></TD>

Try this stylesheet. I removed the code that removed the borders.

<style>
img { max-width:100%; }
@media(max-width:640px){
td { display:block; width:100%; box-sizing:border-box; }
.storename font{ font-size:1.8em; }
}
</style>

I personally don't see any benefit in adding the table of contents at the top of the listing. It's just one more thing to scroll past. By now, buyers are accustomed to expecting the description first and small print afterwards.

You might play with that color in the left column titles to see how it looks when the titles are stacked at smaller sizes.

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@shipscript

Hello again,

I really wish I didn’t have to ask you for more of your help and time !  It really bothers me that I can’t fix these issues myself.

First off, Thank You for the newest fixes from 4/19 - but now there are just 3 slight issues (easily fixed ? I hope).  I have tried again, spent over 6+ hours yesterday trying - I can’t seem to find the answer.

1.)  This is the Newest Listing going forward - 382047640150.  It is currently listed as a Test.

2.)  I added the class="storename".  I also added the Stylesheet you provided.

3.)  In the Newest Listing everything is fine at 800.  At 640 - 320 the problem is a black rectangle at the header of the listing & at “Specifications:” - the table Cells wrapping.

At the top of the actual listing, at the very left side of “HardRockPinStore” there is a ‘spacer’ element (one black colored and one white colored; the white is very thin.  The ‘spacer’ element is represented by 2 lines of code, both lines of code begin with <TD width= . . . .

At 640 - 320 these 2 TD expand horizontally to the entire length of the listing.  Visually, it looks like a long black rectangle on top of “HardRockPinStore”.

This seems to work, but not really (I tried this and then put the code back):

Trying to resolve this issue, I removed the 2 lines of code <IMG height= . . . . . to just before the </TD>.  At 640 - 320 the black rectangle disappears.  Sort of a fix, but I would like to just have this black and white ‘spacer’ to scale down instead of disappearing.  Size approximately 2% black, 1% (or less, if possible) white - the remaining Blue area “HardRockPinStore” at 97+ %.

This ‘spacer’ element corresponds to the look of my Store headers.  I may have copied the code from this store element (I believe provided by e b a y) when I first set up this html, long ago.

Additional information - above this area, in the code is <TABLE class=eBay . . . . . I am not sure if this could cause any issues ? ? ?  Removing it, nothing seems to change.

4.)  At “SPECIFICATIONS:” - the table cells Don’t stay in 2 columns (horizontally right next to each other) at 640 - 320.  The cells wrap underneath each other as the columns of information are scaled down.

Easy fix ?

5.)  [at 320 - previous issue at 480 and at 320 - now only at 320]

At the right hand side of the listing (when looking in the Sandbox) - just below “RETURN POLICY and CONTACT:” - this table is slightly larger than the table below it .  There is just a little bit of horizontal scrolling.

Solving this would make 320 ok (except for the columns of information and the black rectangle mentioned above).

Again, I mention the code <TABLE class=ebay . . . . I am not sure if this could be causing any issues or what it does ? ? ?

Thank you to the power of infinity

PS - “I personally don't see any benefit in adding the table of contents at the top of the listing” - I am considering taking this section out.  Some of my reasons for keeping this section, although I do agree with you in part, is that I list a lot of additional pictures and a lot of information.  I feel this table of contents will help buyers realize I have listed all of this information.  Another reason - I feel buyers (new buyers especially) don’t know how to contact a seller.  Contact a seller, previously was at the top of the page, as I am sure you know.

So still thinking about this, modified the section a little already - all of your suggestions are seriously considered and greatly appreciated.

As for the color of the left side - tried to switch some colors (keeping with the colors already in my color scheme) but can’t seem to find some combination that works (looks pleasing to the eye/me).  Plus, now when the titles are stacked at smaller sizes - they look ok because now there are borders with the use of the new style sheet.

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@hardrockpinstore

We are just tweaking a template that really needs an overhaul, so little tweaks aren't going to provide the perfect solution, and a little tweak here may produce a little problem over there.  Remember, this is a table-based template that was not designed with skinny in mind, so we are just making do what what is available.

a) Wrapping the two-column terms into a single column is intentional. That is the only way to make the columns display correctly using minor tweaks. If two columns appeared together on a 320 device, the content would contain one word per row - definitely unreadable.

b) eBay' black and white boxes converting to a solid span across the top is an artifact of the above. If undesirable, I would just remove both TD rows. You can do it manually or use the stylesheet to turn off the two TDs, as shown below.

<style>
img { max-width:100%; }
@media(max-width:640px){
td { display:block; width:100%; box-sizing:border-box; }
.storename font { font-size:1.5em; width:100%; }
table.ebay td:nth-child(1){ display:none; }
table.ebay td:nth-child(2){ display:none; }
}
</style>

c) The font size of the store name is causing the tiny bit of scrollbar and variance in table widths. I've descreased the font size a bit in the stylesheet above.

If you plan to create new listings with this older template, there are many instances of unclosed tags within the page, perhaps due to multiple edits.  It also looks like an old editor was used, back before it became standard practice to close all elements. Fortunately, table code is capable of self-terminating loose ends within the table, so that helps with the appearance. But you will probably want to spend a little time to clean that up going forward.

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@shipscript

Once again - my thanks goes to you !

I completely understand and agree about tweaking the template - fix something here - changes something there.  Believe it or not I am kind of a perfectionist (although my code doesn’t look that way anymore !)  I just wanted to get the listing tweaked as close as possible to ‘perfect’.

A.)  Ok - I understand.  Makes sense.  I changed the columns, alternating the color to hopefully make it easier to read when scaled down to 480 / 320.

Care to give an opinion on how it looks (don’t worry I have thick skin) ?  Listing 382047640150.

B.)  The black and white boxes TD rows - As a compromise with myself, I removed the 2 lines of code <IMG height= . . . . . to just before the </TD>.

The black and white boxes TD rows stay formatted scaling down to 800.  Then at 640 - 320 the black rectangle disappears.

I can live with this - do you think there is any kind of issue with removing the code that was there ?

LEFT THIS            <TD width=4 bgColor=#000000></TD>      (changed the 15 to 4)

DELETED THIS   <IMG height=26 src="http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/s.gif" width=15>

C.)  font-size:1.5em;     I changed this - works Great !

D.)  “many instances of unclosed tags” - caused from 17 years of editing and building this code - self taught / not sure what I was doing then, even less sure now   : )

Is there a program / website to run the code through which will find the unclosed / stray tags ?

THANK YOU !

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@hardrockpinstore

A. The colors help the specs. If you had classnames on each of the tables, we could spell out which ones are to wrap and which ones won't. However, then we are getting into the realm of serious editing, as is your colorizing.

B. This works, the reason is that there is no vertical content to hold the cells open (the images were there for that purpose). So when you set a width, that will work. The height is determined by the store name. Additionally, because your store name represents content and the colored cells have no content, the colored cells will collapse when the table is no longer wide enough to accomodate the store name (seen on browsers that don't understand media queries). When the cell is put onto its own row by the media query in the stylesheet, the width is still there, but there is no height to keep it open.  So it basically disappears.

D. The SCAN button on this tool may help you locate the missing or mismatched tags. It was designed many years ago to help eBay sellers on eBay's Photos/HTML forum check simple templates and to check against eBay rules. When eBay gutted the forums 8 years ago, it was no longer updated. But it's a start.

Seems it was the code that the Mobile Friendly Checker produced that would not let the above post go through (we will see if the above post stays posted this time!)

I hope you can just put my listing number - 382047640150 - in the Checker to see what the code is.

One another note:

I have been looking at your listings - I’m going to assume you sale templates ?

I like some elements of these two listings (they look really fantastic / professional):

382002987823

382049054978

I hope it is ok to ask about prices on the boards - if not send me a message thru the eBay message system

Thank you for all you have done

Re: Java Script & Plug Ins

@shipscript

POST 28 and POST 29 are out of order as they would disappear due to having some code in the post.  Last time I try to see if this post will stay.

Well I did more tweaks today. Changed the layout a bit - increased the width of the Description area text by moving “Description” to the top of the area. I like how this looks and still able to keep the bottom ‘small print' area formatting as is (I feel there is good separation / easier to read both areas).

A.) “However, then we are getting into the realm of serious editing, as is your colorizing.”

Color scheme is not pleasing to the eye/easy to read ?

I have notice on some screens the color scheme looks purple-ish. It should look like nice shades of soothing blue (corn flower blue).

B.) Very interesting - had to read it a couple of times to finally understand how it works. My skills are more in the realm of - it works how I want it to - don’t know how I made it work.

Decided to delete these 2 lines of code.  Also, deleting this helped to give “HardRockPinStore” some cell Padding

C.) Checked it out. Interesting. Thank you for the link. Not sure when I will have the time to clear up my code - keep saying I’m going to do it for the last decade (no joke).

D.) Mobile Friendly Checker:

Tried my current version - 382047640150

Got this response back:

Your listing isn't mobile friendly yet, lets fix your settings

Incorrect viewport settings

Please add the header code below or replace your existing code with the code below:

~ WONT POST TO THE BOARD WITH THIS CODE ~

I want to be certain about what I should do here - Should I just add this code to the top part of my code (as I have done with the codes you have previously provided) ?

As everything (viewing from 320 - 1200) seems fine without this code, I am thinking I don’t need it as I believe you provided some version of this code ? ? ?

Please let me know (as again, Thank You’s are raining from the sky)

OK, I got it!!  And yes, I just need to delete the highlighted information.  But OMG, what a job this is going to be, and I only have 53 listings.  I can't even imagine people who have hundreds of listings to be modified.  Wow.

Thanks again, Shipscript!!

I 'fixed' over 3,000 listings in a couple of weeks (off and on) by just using ship's scanner then copy & pasting the IDs to my SM page and editing out the content in description 8 at a time (8 is the most IDs you can post in the search field).
