I just received a shirt returned back as item not as described due to "smelling of cigarrette smoke". I, nor anyone in my home, smoke. I am allergic to it. Before the customer opened the return she emailed me asking what to do about the smell of smoke. I have free returns set up so I told her to return it but questioned the claim because I do not smoke. I asked if it was possible the outside bag smelled of smoke due to a postal service driver possibly smoking in the truck (I package everything in a baggie and then place it in an eBay bag). She didn't respond. I sent another email asking for the local post office city/county name so that I can make a complaint. She didn't respond. She just opened a SNAD return so i'd have to refund her the original shipping cost. I received the item and it smells of no smoke. She included the original package in a new envelope and it smells nothing of smoke. At least I got the shirt back but I'm still out the orignal shipping cost. She is a seller as well so I have a hard time believing she didn't know what she was doing with this. Now I get a SNAD and I'm out shipping both ways, and she gets all her money back for tryig on my shirt. On a side note, she's a seller who accepts no returns. So I'm thinking she believes that she has to claim SNAD in order to return it even though I have free returns set up. I'm just wondering how many other sellers have these false claims? It's crazy to me to be accused of smelling of smoke. It wasn't a used item either, it was new.

Screw here. Just move on. Sometimes it's better to just carry on and take things like this as a grain of salt. Hopefully there's more sales down the road for you. It's not worth it to fight her or any other entity on this. I doubt eBay is going to help.

Is she a competitor?
If so, she probably knew exactly what she was doing.
With the new changes, excessive returns could cause you to be banned in that category.
Just block her immediately.

Your shirt was used. You have no idea if the person at the garage sale smoked. You cannot expect your buyer to know if the postman smoked and it is very unlikely it is the postman's fault.

It was my shirt, not purchased from a garage sale.

The OP stated that the shirt was new - NOT used.

Carriers let postal workers smoke in the truck?
I would think smoking on the job at all would be prohibited.

The listing says used. I would think that would make for an irate buyer to have to read that for an excuse. The OP has no idea, and in fact, it is 99.999% chance it was NOT the postman. The OP wants to file a report against the postman with no proof whatsoever. I feel sorry for the postman.

I'm not sure what listing you are refering to but it doesn't say used. It's a Lularoe tunic. It's a new item. And no report was made about any postal service person because the item doesn't smell like smoke at all. I was trying to figure out how it could possibly smell of smoke.

@spreadlovelikefire You asked generally if false SNADs happen a lot when you have free returns. I'd say definitely yes for clothing. Fit is like the #1 reason why clothing buyers return items. A lot of these buyers still file SNAD after I tell them exactly to file "doesn't fit" and they will still get a free return label and a full refund. I guess it doesn't matter to some... if something doesn't fit them, the item HAS to be defective and it's the end of the world.
The sad part is that even though eBay will recognize that these are false SNADs, they won't do anything to remove it or change it to remorse.

I know:( I just called and they said they can't do anything. I'm more concerned about the 4% increase coming in September. The manager at least gave me an original shipping credit. I figured they would be more inclined to reverse SNAD's if you do free returns but they aren't. And I'm not even sure if the "report a user" does anything. I tried at least.

I read this thread awhile back and found Trinton`s explanation of policy interesting. If you take returns though, you are taking them for any reason. You offer free returns so I`m not sure why a buyer would lie when the return is free. Wait Did I miss something in the updates ? Banned?
I see this below about fees but nothing about banned.
As a reminder, starting October 1, 2018, if you have very high rates of "item not as described" returns you may be subject to additional 4% final value fee in affected categories based on the Service Metrics policy. Maximum fee caps do not apply to the additional 4% final value fees. See our selling fees article for more information on how final value fees are calculated.
Starting November 1, 2018, if you have very high rates of "item not received" requests, you may be subject to extended delivery estimates in affected categories.
