I sold a pre-owned printer with 30 days return policy
Within the return period the customer opened payment dispute saying item doesn't match the listing
I responded that since it is within return period, the customer needs to return the item for refund. I cannot refund without a return.
But in the end ebay sided in buyer's favor and I lose the the whole payment plus $20 dispute fee.
It is unfair that the customer can get full money back without returning the item even when we accept return and the purchase is eligible for free return.
How to successfully appeal this case? Thanks.

Sorry, but Ebay didn't side with the buyer, the buyers payment source did.
When their payment source gets involved, you don't usually get the item back.

Buyer made a dispute with their credit card where they might not have recognized the purchase or something like that...so you are dealing with a bank and eBay takes a step back.
'dispute fee'...doing a dispute you do get charged $20.00 sometimes.
Sorry to say there's nothing to do except block this buyer from future purchases.
This disputes are rather hard to win from the bank...but not impossible.

I understand this is buyer filing a chargeback. and this chargeback type is "item not as described" not "unauthorized" or "item not received"
I also understand this is tough case since bank usually will side with buyer.
But since this is within return period, should customer at least return the product?
ebay's reason is that this is not qualified for "seller protection", is this always the case with "item not as described" chargeback?

There is no seller protection for "item not as described" eBay claims (unless a buyer used a Freight Forwarder and the seller acts quickly) or Payment Disputes (aka chargebacks). Unless the person is required by the payment institution to return the product (PayPal does if the dispute is filed with them) you are not going to be getting it back. eBay does not require a return of the product for chargebacks, and because you "lost" you get to pay the $20 bonus fee as well.
The motto is NEVER SELL ANYTHING HERE THAT YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE. Anything can be had for free (at your expense) with the right kind of claim. It is sad, but how it works.

I have option to appeal. but is that useless as it seems a waste of time if I cannot provide anything help to win?
