Item destroyed

An item I was selling got destroyed in Hurricane Ian’s flood.  I did not set up a bank account. I have to cancel the sale. Would I be responsible for any fees?

Re: Item destroyed

Hi, very sorry for your situation. Because you have been impacted by Ian, you might be interested in the recent eBay announcement regarding the hurricane’s fallout. See link below.

As for needing to cancel the sale, go to your seller hub to do so. But first, what do you mean by you haven't set up a bank account? Are you saying you did not link a bank account to your eBay account before you listed your item for sale?

@fashunu4eeuh

EBay stupidly allows new and returning sellers to list without confirming that the newbie has registered for Managed Payments.

Look how easy it is to list and sell on eBay! What makes you think you will ever actually see the money you were paid?  Not our problem!

@chrifor7357  You should also Message your buyer and let them know what happened. My suggestion to show the buyer that you are telling the truth is to include a picture or twelve of what remains of your home and storage area. Ask if he is willing in the circumstances to have the sale cancelled.

Thank you for the head’s up, @reallynicestamps ! What a bad idea to allow new sellers to list without a method to receive payment!

Not only does eBay allow any new seller to start selling without setting up Managed Payments first. eBay encourages new sellers to jump right in and create your first listing. After all why would a new seller need to know about getting paid, seller fees, or anything else before they start selling.

If the buyer has already paid then you will only be on the hook for the 30 cent transaction fee.

If the buyer has not paid then no fees have been charged.
