We have more than 7000 items listed. Last year ebay recommended that a new data field - "inscribed" be completed - Yes or No.
This month ebay is recommending that a new data field "Ex-Libris" be completed - Yes or No
Do the data experts at ebay think we have nothing better to do than retouch listings that have already been completed by us?

Worry about the required specifics, then if you find time, worry about the recommended.

OMG...I agree with you 100% (most of those suggested "item specifics" are ridiculous). Plus it is confusing to customer if you have 1,000 different "item specifics" filled out (they have no idea what the item is). I only fill in specifics that make sense and give customer a clear picture of what they are getting.
I create all my listings on a desktop computer and when EBAY pesters me to fill in "suggested specifics" I just "click box" that says "don't remind me again" and that stopped incessant nagging.

It Looks like someone who works at Ebay and continues to add these Item specifics is bored. Each week there are more added.

My understanding from something I saw recently (forget where) is that the "Recommended" specifics are based on percentages of customers who click those options in their search refinements. So theoretically if you're not filling them in you could be losing customer views whether they search for Yes or No in Ex-Libris (for instance) because yours won't show up either way if you don't fill that in, if they check one of those boxes. We've started filling in everything we can simply to test, and it's been a while now with good sales so I do believe it makes some difference, though whether it's worth our time is still up in the air.

Personally, i only fill in required item specifics and ignore recommended item specifics,. Most of the important facts are in my title and then repeated in my description. I never even get any questions from buyers who don't understand what I'm selling. Ebay doesnt give buyers or sellers enough credit for intelligence. I have been at this for so long i remember when there were no item specifics and listing was zippy fast.
