Is this some sort of scam or fraud? Received message from somebody claiming I sent them an item.

Can anyone help me here?

About a week ago I sold an item which was delivered to the address / name I was provided.  The package was sent to a business in the attention of another person's name (Not the same person listed on the transaction.)

Today, four days later,  I receive a message from some random Ebay user who I've never done any business with claiming to be the person at that business / address with the name that was on the package but say they never ordered it.

I don't know what to make of their message so I have included it below changing the names that were used.

" Good Morning,
My name is Joe Blow, I for some reason received one of these panels on 4-18-20 from you but I did not order it. It was sent to ABC Manufacturing ATTN. Joe Blow in Wherever, WI and I also have no record of paying for it. I am not sure who actually ordered it, but I also ended up with a generator receptacle shipped from Home Depot the day before this showed up and it was ordered by a guy named Andrew. Not sure if that's who ordered your panel, but please let me know how you would like to handle getting this to the correct person or putting me in touch with the correct person so they can arrange a way to get this.
Thanks, Joe"

I don't know who this random Ebay user is that sent me this message claiming to be the person at that address I sent the package to.  As far as I'm concerned the person addressed at that business / address received their item.  I have now clue who this person is and am not going to message them back because I have no clue who they are as I never had a transaction with them.

Can anyone figure this one out?  Is this some sort of scam of fraud?

You wrote, "The name on the Paypal transaction I received was Michael. It was a mobile payment. The address that package was being sent to had a different name (Joe Blow) along with the business name (it's legit)."

Call the business and ask for Michael and then Joe Blow.  If you one of them on the phone have a discovery discussion.  Make notes, day & time & what was discussed.  Do not communicate by email and set yourself up for failure.  Add the buyer to your blocked buyer list.

And when you have the facts, File a buyer complaint & document it with ebay customer service so you can have them remove a Neg if you get one.

Good Luck

I don't want to communicate with Joe Blow. I never had a transaction with them.

You sent him a package, he's a real person who works for real business.

Seems highly unlikely to be your enemy or part of some plan to scam you.

I'd be asking the "Buyer"   that contacted me,    "Are you expecting another / different package from another / different seller?"

Was the message via eBay Messages or eMail?

How as the recipient able to message you? Did you include a packing slip or something with your eBay ID or email on it?

Sounds like someone screwed up a triangulation scheme.

You could write to the person who bought it and tell them what's happening.

Little update.

I decided to message my buyer.  I asked them if they were happy with the item.  They respond back shortly that they received the item but haven't opened it yet and was pleased with how quickly it arrived.

As far as this Joe Blow person is concerned I still don't know who they are besides them claiming to be the person at the business address that package was shipped to.  Keep in mind I never had a transaction with this person / Ebay id.  They could very well be the correct recipient in some weird way but if my buyer said they received the package and were happy with it then who is this Joe Blow person that messaged me saying they received a package from me and had no clue why they received it or the other random package they received from someone else days earlier.

I'm so confused but as long as my buyer says they received it then I should be ok.

Re: Is this some sort of scam or fraud? Received message from somebody claiming I sent them an item

I included a packing slip incase the package got lost. I assume this Joe Blow person (recipient / never had a transaction with) used the information on the packing slip to contact me through eBay saying they received a package from me they never purchased. Maybe my buyer (Michael) send this person an item and didn't tell them but why would the Joe Blow guy also receive another item from someone else that he also didn't order from a different person (not Michael). Weird.
