Is it really "the economy'?

"The US ecomony grew at a blistering rate despite high interest rates" - CNN

"US GDP grew at a 4.9% annualized rate over three months ending in September" - ABC

"U.S. Economic Growth Accelerated in the Third Quarter" - New York Times

"Amazon reports better-than-expected results, as revenue jumps 13%" - CNBC

Well, so much for THAT being a reason why we're seeing slow sales 😕

@vintagecraze50

So That’s why my chicken thighs in a bag went from 5.99 to 8.90 a bag at the discount store.

There was also an(other) outbreak of avian flu last year which led to massive culling of flocks.

And that meant fewer hens to lay the next generation.

We usually have duck at Christmas and it took several trips to find any.

For interest sake, how many kilos /pounds are in that bag?

I buy the three kilo skinless/boneless frozen  thighs whenever they are on sale, but the sale price here has risen from $26.95 a box to $32.95 a box. ( Three kilos is 6.6 pounds and our Canadian loonie is 75c USD.)

So this has implications for future disruptions to our world with climate change. You know many people do not even grasp the magnitude of this.

My niece is in geology and her BF is a research geologist.  The "Powers That Be" have folks worried about Hurricanes, beach front disappearing, weather etc.  Sure, real concerns there but that's the tip of the axe...

Much of the rest of the Axe now goes unspoken.

#1 Pandemic did not become a major concern over 40 years whereby protocol was developed that yeah, President threw away, I'd say because he wanted invoke the Presidential Emergency Powers Acts thus, bye bye elections and much more...  But that aside, already 40 years back MAJOR concerns arose on two fronts.  One being Nasa found that bacterium had no problem surviving and thriving in the harshest environment known to man, outer space w/ extreme temperature variances and radiation.  Two, that there are hordes of pathogens that have not saw the light of day for tens of thousands of years trapped in Permafrost thats melting.  Those bacteria/viruses could readily devastate plant life, food chains and yeah,, even Human or  or Dogs, Cats etc... Did you know that Covid (Corona Virus) is thought to have jumped from Bovines (Cattle) to Humans in the 1800's.  Covid proved the wise scientists from the 1980's correct, had it been a truly NOVEL Virus, aka: Not a Corona Virus but something NEW to todays world well...  You might imagine.

#2 Global Warming, ALL THAT WATER and ALL THAT WEIGHT of melted glaciation.  Earth is like a smooshed beach ball, its not round.  Much of that pressure on the crust is due to Glaciers and glacial melt removes that weight.  In the Great Lakes for example "Rebound" has been measured now, that is to say year after year they get more shallow and year after year the rebound is getting faster.  On the poles of the Earth that an enormous game changer, those ice caps directly impact both earth's "wobble" and it's Axis.  Those are impactors (HUGE) on everything from Continental Drift, Magma flows, mineral flows, seismic zones on and on and on.  Then there is ALL THAT WATER, that melt results in huge amounts of more ground water and weather impacts where it ends up.  WATER is a lubricant for plate tectonics.  This is the stuff that nobody is talking to anybody in the public about yet it is KNOWN Magma flows are changing, been changing, Yellowstone is one of the key research points as its a Super Volcano and with that comes huge underground flows and thus better indicators of change as our technology and knowledge of global nature systems is still very infant.

Now America is rather unique in that the entire center of nation "The Heartland" between basically the Appalachians and The Rockies was once a shallow inland sea.  How much sea level rise to start seeing types of events in action is speculation as its based on current melt.  Yet the Geologic record of the globe CLEARLY shows that catastrophic water based events dont tend to happen over tens of thousands, thousands or even hundreds of years.  They can occur quite rapidly.  It was recently discovered for example glacial melt on the southern pole is happening UNDER IT at a very alarming rate.  This is due likely to changes in Magma flows as glacial weight is taken off areas of the planet or so some theorize.

Now I can tell you some that my nieces BF researches with say "We're already past the ragged edge" and mother nature is telling us so in her way.  That she WILL bring the planet back into balance whether or not human beings survive that or not.  The building blocks of life, microbial are tougher than the the complex creatures such as humans.  The simpler the organism the less prone it appears to be.

Everyone needs to see the recent documentary about the research done by Lonnie Thompson called Canary.  It’s quite sobering.  BTW Lonnie is from small town near my home growing up in West Virginia.

Buyers are lemmings who go back to the same sellers over and over even if said sellers are charging 2-6x more for the same items other seller are listing their items. SMH. Worst 2 weeks I've had since I started selling on eBay 12 years ago. What to do?

Theirs is a big part of the problem in this as well because people are already pretty maxed out. There is no room for any internet shopping. I saw this coming when the interest rates started to hike up. Many purchase things on credit.

Honestly, that sounds like a them problem. My parents always taught me that with the exception of major/necessary purchases (such as a car, a new appliance, car repairs, etc.) you should never buy anything on credit that you can't pay off within a month or two, because if you can't pay it off within a month or two then you have absolutely no business buying it in the first place.

We get a 10 lb bag and its the thigh and the leg. They are with skin on. We live in North Carolina. Great discount grocery store chain called UNITED GROCERY OUTLET. I do get many things there that are  50-75 percent off everywhere else and fresh not outdated at all. It has saved me so much money.

There was a fantastic show on PBS I think it was last night I watched it. Some millions of years ago the earth and most of its life was destroyed by the very same co2 phenomenon that was naturally induced, not the co2 that we are pimping out everyday. It showed EXACTLY what you have so very wonderfully ddiscussed here retro. We are well on our way to this same catastrophe.

ebay reports its Q3 2023 results on November 7th, that will give us a better picture of how ebay is doing. My guess (nothing more): A continued decline in GMV, offset by a small increase in the take rate, which will allow ebay to show some small revenue growth overall. If the take rate has not increased (for example, sellers have pulled back from using Promoted Listings), ebay might not show revenue growth, period.

But this is just a guess, and we'll see on November 7th.

Of course, whether ebay is doing well or not, just as whether the economy is doing well or not, does not mean any particular ebay seller is doing well

Regardless of the results, ebay executives are clearly convinced ebay is on the right track. I therefore do not foresee a change in their marketing strategy for the Holiday Season, nor do I see ebay doing much that will help my business during Q4.

I really enjoy reading Retro’s post. Always so well done and always with some humor injected into it. Very very well done.

Only way I see eBay showing growth on November 7 is if they replace GAAP numbers with "Magical" numbers pulled out of CEOs rump.

That's called 'seller trust' and it's because those buyers *know* those sellers and that they'll never regret spending their money with them. As far as I'm concerned, that's worth gold. I have repeat buyers on all three sites I sell on, and I work to cultivate them and to be a seller that people will want to patronise again. I would never call them 'lemmings.' Used items (I sell mostly pre-owned) can kinda be the wild west when it comes to item condition, etc., much more than new items, so sticking with a trusted seller, particularly with one-off items, is understandable to me.

Interesting, love to see it. Was it on Nova?

Nature will ALWAYS bring things back into her balance as much as humans care think we can control so much the reality is we control next to nothing.  In American and other westernized nations we bask around the terms and concepts of "security" yet everyone knows there is no such thing.

The urgency to get to Mars with colonies is not one of, "Well, that seems like the stepping stone to the universe!"  How silly is that!  The reason is the geologic record of the Earth doesn't lie and the advent of the information age and technology due to it has uncovered the stark realities.

Also, nature and the earth is bigger than all of us (and it does not rest on the back of a turtle).
